There is only one thing missing in Folsom and that's a 4yr college/university...

Sac State has plans for a satellite campus in Placer county somewhere around Roseville. Classes are scheduled to start fall 2006.
That will be a much shorter commute than going to the main campus.
Maybe UC could put a campus in Eldorado county.
There is no suitable place left for a large campus in Folsom. UC Eldorado Hills sounds more likely than UC Folsom unless Folsom annexes the land on the south side of highway 50. I doubt that the UC system would build another campus this close to Davis anyway. More likely they would expand that campus if needed instead of building a whole new campus within 40 miles.

Perhaps Folsom can have its own satellite campus focused on the business of high-tech.

There are over a 100 high-tech companies in El Dorado and Intel alone has over 6,000 hi-tech workers in Folsom with paid tuition reimbursement... sounds to me like an opportunity.

I know that I would probably take classes (since the company I work for also reimburses for tuition), but I wouldn't be willing to travel to Davis (80 miles round-trip) - specially not during rush hour traffic joker.gif

P.S. Thanks Cyber....

I wouldn't be surprised if Folsom Lake College turns in to something like that when it eventually gets bigger.

I don't see that happening - not enough room. Unless all the surrounding land is designated for Folsom CC, you have to factor so much more into things - room for dorms, a small stadium, parking structures, etc... with Folsom growing as quickly as it is, this campus will likely run out of room. It is a beautiful campus (albeit small), it's got one helluva view too!

If there was a demand, I'm sure Folsom Lake College could start offering more high-tech related courses and degrees without needing dorms and a stadium. It would not require that much land. It is not as if the campus would need to be doubled or tripled in size for this.

I work in Admissions and records ant FLC, and I can tell you that the campus will be huge. We already have about 8000 students. FLC has 150 acres that have been mapped out. We will have a fine arts center, pools, sports fields, class rooms, everything you can imagine.

I have been working and attending there for two years and i have seen go from the portables to the new buildings we have now. I hope to see you all taking a class in the Fall. biggrin.gif

It really is a beautiful campus for any of you who haven't had the chance to visit there. Best view of the Valley I've ever seen, too! cool.gif

The night we had the big storms, I was sitting in the squad car with the campus police officer. It was the most impressive thing I have ever seen. We had an awesome view of three thunderbolts etc.

On topic, FLC will be accredited in 2004 and big things will come. We are currently accredited through CRC.

Hey Joe, the campus is number one on my list of places I would like to work when I move to Folsom. Too bad they have pulled so many jobs in the district. happy.gif

Yeah, with the budget cuts everything is tense now. It is scary to see education being cut. Tution is supposed to be raised to $18/unit in the fall. Apperently when Los rios raised tution from $11 to $12 in the 90's a large number of students dropped. Only time will tell how bad the budget cuts will hurt us.

still, $18 a unit is pretty damn cheap for college education.

College education should be as cheap as possible. Students don't have any money.

Don't forget - when you're advocating cheap fees for public education at the college level, you may be asking the taxpayers to pay more and more of the bill rather than the student. Community colleges are a bargain and hopefully they'll stay that way. If not, it's only right that the student bear the bulk of the fee increase, not the taxpayer.
