so it looks like the discussion is over... the library WILL be built at Farley field. Not enough verified signatures to trigger a vote.

What happened here?

Did they collect a bunch of invalid signatures??

Non Folsom voters???

A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

This result is typical. Signature-gathering always turns up a huge number of invalid signatures – unregistered voters, unreadable names, people who inadvertently sign more than once, etc. Even the south of 50 people had 15 percent of their signatures tossed out. In a lot of campaigns, someone checks the signatures against the county records every few days so they know how many good ones they actually have. Apparently the biggest problem here was unregistered voters. I know of people who signed who said they were never asked if they were registered.

The highest rate of bad signatures always occurs at tables outside of stores. The best way is to get precinct lists and knock on doors of people the list shows are registered.

I do hope the community can come together on this project now.

I certainly didn't say no one was asked. But I know some people who weren't. Whether they were asked or not asked is of no consequence to the results, however.

You've said repeatedly, Lori, that you would support the library if your efforts did not succeed. Please join us now in giving this community a library.

I wish we had just one forum for both of these topics!

It occurs to me to add something here, Lori. There is absolutely nothing illegal or unethical about not asking petition signers if they're registered to vote. It wasn't a criticism, just an observation. It might have helped eliminate some bad signatures, but it wouldn't have helped get any more good ones.

Please do not misdirect my words LInda
I said if it went to a vote and the voters voted for the library we would back down
that has not happened
where did u get your information?
we have not even been provided with this information
it is interesting that voter's registration said it would take them some time and they had the answer by Friday when the signatures were turned in Tuesday am and then delivered Tuesday afternoon

Ms. Holderness

I think you have twisted waterbaby's words. If this had gone to a vote and failed then the Save the Park people would step aside. Nobody ever said they would become library-in-the-park cheerleaders, and if you think that is going to happen after the behavior of certain library commissioners and the mayor's comments you are seriously deluded.

The mayor's comments in the Bee are not only insulting and slanderous to the signature gatherers they are insulting to the people who signed the petition hoping to vote on this issue. Even if we didn't agree with them, at least King and Morin had the guts to come forward and try to talk to the opposition. Mayor Miklos hunkered down and kept quiet until the petition has apparently failed and then the coward comes forward with his unfounded "mistruths" statement. What speck of respect I had for the mayor has totally vanished.

I would like to point out the library newspaper ad campaign failed to produce one single written signature withdrawal to the city clerk. If all these people were duped into signing, why weren't there hundreds of withdrawals?

Even if it turns out there were only 2700 verified signatures, those are 2700 registered voters that wanted to vote on this issue and I don't think they can be characterized as a handful of malcontents. I hope they hold the council accountable.

Thank you Ducky - could not have said it better myself
We approached this champaign with honesty and integrity and along the way had to turn the other cheek constantly - from comments made when gathering signatures, to letters in the Telegraph, to the newspapers not printing our side of the issue.
I will be at the cc meeting tuesday night and I will be asking Ms. Miklos what untruths were said....
and I will demand an apology
We should also be receiving one from Ms.Ward and Ms. Mayham also - I have no respect for the male members of the cc, the library commission, the parks commission, or Mr. Sheldon
As a member of the Folsom VFW 6604, I have been insulted by the cc members comments, Mr. Sheldon's and others and city hall - and Mr. Sheldon may claim to be a veteran - but I see no honor in his serving then or now!

John – is there any way we can combine these two threads - this with the library2? The comments are starting to interweave.

The whole freaking city council is full of corrupt and evil businessmen that do not care for the community but only for their personal goals

What does "evil businessmen" mean?! Looking at the city's website, they don't all have business experience, and I couldn't find any examples of any of them actually starting and running a business (except Andy Morin who owns a restaurant with his brother).

If you're going to be suspisious of anything, be so of their past in government service or the law, not the fact that they may be "businessmen".

folsomjr,

If you're intent was to be ironic, then my apologies, I totally and completely missed it. I guess I'm too used to people unwittingly juxtaposing the words "evil" and "business".
