Come see the foundations of Mormon Island before the next storm (Wednesday)... 2 storms are forecast for this week, so it may be as low as it gets for many years if this is the beginning of the rainy season.

Update:
It is illegal to take things from these areas... take pictures and nothing else... thanks!

It looks like a fun, quick adventure with the kids. Can you drive around down there? We have 4x4.

You might see people down there in their trucks, but realize that you can get a ticket for doing that. I think you aren't supposed to go below the high water mark.

Yes be cautious I was in the Folsom Point lot the other day checking it out haven't been since summer and the park ranger and a Folsom PD car where parked and talking about how many people are going past the barricades and they are going to step up patrol and give out tickets and if you get caught more that once the ticket prices are going to get up... I guess they have had to call out many a tow truck lately to pull people out of the mud.... Park on top and take a walk to prevent a costly fine...

Not only that it gives environmentalists ammo to shut down lake use.

Still, I really want to go check this out. It looks really cool.

Its an easy walk from the Mormon Island Dam parking area. Cross over the dike and drop into the lake bottom (now dry) keeping the high water mark to your right. Walk about half a mile, and as you crest the next hill, the rock foundations will be ahead of you near the water line. Enjoy.

That's really something.

Kind of scary, the circumstances that let it be exposed...

Please, everyone, remember that this is a protected archaeological site and don't start taking artifacts home with you. This is federal property and taking historic materials is illegal.

I really think this is just the beginning too - I was looking at some old photos of Mormon Island and there are lots of buildings in the area. If you have pictures, please send them to me so I can put them in the Mormon Island page.

And seriously, don't take your 4x4 out. I don't know if it's illegal but you will get stuck. Apparently people are getting stuck every day. I got stuck, as did my father-in-law when he came to pull me out. Fortunately a good samaritan (thanks Nick!) saved the day for us. It's extremely slick and even a 4x4 can't get out of it.

There's archaeology, and then there's rusty junk...

it's not a bad walk from the lower parking lot from the marina... head south and look for this:

then follow the edge of the lake...

You'll walk past this:

(but you may miss it, you may walk right by it. Marina is in background)

then you'll walk past this:

and then over the crest you can see it.

Please take pictures of the houses at the lowest water levels as we may have not gotten them yet. smile.gif
