Maybe there was a problem with your budgeting skills while times were good. Whereas you were probably raking in the dough hand over fist, the public guy was steadily making their salary. No huge increases. No bonuses. Just regular 'ol salary. Times started going bad, and you didn't scale back your spending. The public guy didn't have to.....they didn't have the ability to spend crazy money. It wasn't there in the first place. Now times are bad, and so is YOUR pay. Doesn't mean the public guy caused it. It means you failed to plan, so you planned to fail. So misery loves company and everyone should be in your boat paddling up a river without a paddle?

I'm just not seeing your logic when you say everyone should feel the same pain. It's usually the people that pace themselves that are going to win the race. If you EVER want to compare highest yearly salary, let me know.

You know, I sometimes find a little raw humor and irony while reading other peoples perspectives. While reading Mike's post, and Texson's also, a marble moved across the floor of my brain and caused me to recall some posts I had read in this forum, a while back - during the not so bad, but not so good, times. As I recall, it was the period when the food and gasoline prices were rising sharply and people were more inclined to spend more time at home - to save money due to the gas - rather than take trips and outings. Folks were posting their complaints about the rising costs, but were also posting their creative ways of avoiding those expenses, yet, still able to enjoy family and friends. They were some good ideas too...

With that said, I also seem to recall postings from a guy, during that time, that really had a (IMO) 'In your face attitude...,' that really enjoyed talking down to people, and made an M.O. of bragging about just how good he had it - while many folks were just making it. Hmmm... that poster's name will come to me eventully, after more marbles move around.

Anyway, this guy would boldly post (in the reader's face...) about his ability to make money, intelligent investments, his prosporous business etc. etc.... And then he would continually brag about such things as.... 'Rollin' out his huge gas-guzzling SUV and taking trips to lakes - while towing his big beautiful boat... And he would usually cap off his posts with something along the lines of.... 'Putting some big fat juicy steaks on the BBQ grill...' To some it up, this guy wanted everyone to know he was on top of the world, he was livin' the life, and the people suffering with economic fears, well, he made it clear - they were just dumb whiners in his eyes. Also, I recall he liked to use the term... "guv-ment..." alot.

Where is that guy, and how's he doing...?

I love the last few posts. I've never had a nice boat, too many juicy steaks waiting for me at home, or a "big fat oil can beer", but I did plan, like I always do, to be conservative with my money. To be quite honest, my standard of living hasn't changed in the last ten years and I don't see it changing too much in the future regardless of what Bush did or what Obama will do in the future. People who lived high on the hog are hating it now and those turtles like me are winning the race. Why should I have to feel the pain of the rabbits?

I would agree more or less, that my standard of living hasn't changed a whole lot, but my ability to save for my retirement has taken a substantial hit from 10 years ago (which means I might be working until I'm 60 or so) But I have made what I feel are some smart investments to give me a sense of security in these troubled times.
I would rather be Backpacking

Oh I don't know about that Mike....

I'm still in "bidness"... still employ people and sign the front side of a pay check... but you are right... I ain't eatin steak every night... but when I want an oil can or glass of wine... or want to take my boat out.. I still do... and like I said while I ain't eatin steak every night... I love assaulting the evening air with the bbq smell of mesquite and garlic...which I do a minimum 5 times a week...

My life is great and I'm happy... except when it comes to the injustice of having to pay taxes to support pensions in the pubic sector that aren't available to the private...

So... while my income has gone way down like it has for a lot folks...? and not just in my business... let me assure you that I'm still in business and will be.. and can handle the "competition"...

don't know that I can say thing about folks in the so called "public sector"...

Just sayin...

Sounds like you don't want anyone to take the steak out of your mouth, except of course if you're choking.

Then you could call the Pair O Medics who do it "just for the money."

that's because we don't agree... now if you are reading sarcasm and passion for me being "unhappy"... you don't know that a person can be "happy" but get "angry" at an injustice... but because I express some "anger" you folks mistake that for unhappy....

It's another great day in paradise... is pretty much my persona...

get back to me with something about my arguments regarding the overspending in the public sector instead of what you think about my happiness....

Simple question. How much of YOUR tax $ (personal income, sales tax or property) do you think actually goes to Calpers retirement?

eating steak every night is not good for you, especially if you cook ribeyes or other ones with lots of fat. a good substitue might be beans which have protein but hold off of them on nights you are on the prowl with your wing man.

for the record I think old EDF is a happy camper who just cares about issues that he feels a passion for. with the economy down he probably cant wow dates with dinner but if you go out late to a bar they probably have eaten and had a few pops on their bill so the evening can be fun and low budget.

Dude..stop it...you're killing me..."pops"

It's not that I'm worrying about someone's happiness, trust me...it's just a comment, I don't "really" care. I think the part that is being left out of this whole discussion, unless I missed it earlier in this thread, is that STRS and CALPERS employees pay anywhere from 8-10% of their income to their respective pension/retirement systems. This is before taxes and is in lieu of social security and other investments 401k, 403bs, etc...their retirements/pensions are not free and if I was in the same boat, I would much rather have that money to invest and grow on my own. I'm quite sure I could do a lot more with my money than STRS or CALPERS or the US "guv-ment" (that was for U EDF - nuthin" but luv, nuthin' but luv.) It's too bad that people with jobs, education, etc...float the bill for others, I feel your pain EDF, but I'm not sure where to even begin unraveling that one...

you may want to check with the folsom pub-safety guys, i think they pay social security also, which most pub-safety dont. EDF, are you planning on using social security? if so, then in a sense the folsom pub-safety people are paying more than their fair share to YOU!

I'm sorry, but I truly do think public sector employees are over-payed, and have a sense of spoiled entitlement. In fact, I'm going to be very very happy when municipalities start going bankrupt left and right, and the public sector employees start getting laid off, begging for bailouts for their overpaid pensions, finally being forced to live within their means, just like everyone else. However, in the end it doesn't really matter what I think, because the public sector employees are GOING DOWN within the next 5 years, due to financial derivatives. Even if they receive a temporary bailout it won't solve anything, just buy them some time, and make things worse heh hehehe. The era of something for nothing protected fiefdoms, and unearned privilege through uneducated mob rule is over, the era of meritocracy is soon upon us all.

Pencil, could you expand a little on your rant? I'm not sure who you are targeting? Could you be a little more specific with examples. The way I read it as it stands is you Don't want any "public sector employees" to keep their jobs and go bankrupt? Then i can only understand by your inferences that you don't want your trash picked up, roads to stay maintained, water, police/fire services then?
