Last week the neighbor across the street came to tell us that he found Leon, a neighborhood cat, dead on his lawn. He said there was bite marks on Leon's head and the bottom half of him was gone. He indicated the inside of the cat was cleaned out. We thought maybe a coyote, but did not know for sure.
This morning at 5 a.m. there was a knock at my door. It was my next door neighbor telling us he walked out to go to work and saw a coyote standing on his lawn eating a cat. My cat...Fluffy. She was cleaned out like Leon.
This afternoon around 12:30, my husband and I were driving along Oak Avenue Parkway where Oak Hills Church is. At the corner of Willow Creek and Oak Avenue there is a field which is part of the Oak Hills Church property. We saw a small coyote walk out of the field a few steps and then turned around and walked back in the field again. In broad daylight. This one was small, but no question a coyote. The one that ate Fluffy was large according to the neighbor. Maybe there is a family of them.
Anyway, please beware. Keep your cats in. Don't get your heart broken like I did. I am going to go now and place signs at the mailboxes in the neighborhood.

Ida:
I am so sorry to hear about your kitty! My heart goes out to you. My cats are indoor only but I have neighbors with outdoor kitties. I will warn them of the coyote sighting.
We back up to the greenbelt at the end of Oak Ave and I'm sure they hunting in that area too.
There's another thread regarding some lost cats. I truly hope they have been found by now. I see that one was.
We will keep our eyes open for the coyote and the missing kitties.

watch out for owls too....
we lost a couple of cats that were walking along the tops of fences... and I know some owls lived close by in these big Oaks along the trails....they come out at night or early evening... I've seen them snatch a rabbit that wasn't looking
a little kitty... is just a snack....

Slightly off topic here: But will a Raccoon eat a cat? Or kill one?
The other night I was outside and Raccoon was waddling down the sidewalk. He gave me no mind and wasn't in any hurry.
An hour later I heard a cat screaching like crazy.
Connected?

A raccoon will not eat a cat but it will "Tear It Up" . As a child my adult cat was opened up from her neck to her tail by a coon... Their claws are real sharp. Racoon's will not go after a cat unless provoked or cornered... Coyote ate my cat in Lex Hills a few years ago they leave half the body for some reason not sure why....

I just want to tell everyone that we just had a visit from a police officer, telling us they found our cat at BT Collins Park and he had been killed by a coyote. They brought us home his collar and gave us an option to come pick him up to have him burried. I am sooooo upset. All I keep thinking is if I had made him stay in, but he was born ferral and never completly liked staying inside all the time. I wanted to let you guys know it is happening alot, the PO said this was her sixth one to bring the owners that bad news. Please do all you can to keep your babies in at night. I know I will never make that mistake again.

I live in the WillowSprings area next to Livermore Park. After reading the post I am wondering if I should worry about leaving my 10 wk old puppy outside while we are at work during the day. We have a good wood & concrete fence around the house with a dog run on the side with a dog house. I left dog food out which may attract other animals, now that I think about it. I do not know what animals are in WillowSprings area but if the cayotes can eat a cat, my puppy right now is just a few inches bigger than a big cat. Should I be worried?

It may be risky. I live near you, and we let one of our cats out at night (he insists on it, meow-meow-meow), but he is fast, so hopefully he'll stay one step ahead. I don't think he wanders too far away anyway.
Doug...
I have opinions, you have opinions. We'll just call it even...is that OK ??

I'm sure there is a lot of prey out here-besides puppies--but I do know that down in some parts of LA--coyotes strictly hunt small cats and dogs--as the natural prey no longer lives in that area. Puppies and small dogs are no match for coyotes. If you are gonna leave a puppy out-you might want to consider a dog run-with a fence or roof over the top. ya know-something the coyote can't jump into-and have a bite before heading back the way it came.

Our fence is over 5 feet high all through out the yard. Does anyone know if cayotes can jump that high?
