Am I reading this correctly that the teachers were not willing to furlough more than three days, even if it would save positions? I hope I am wrong, because I'll be very disappointed if I'm not.

If it were only that easy to understand. There is so much more to it, please don't be quick to judge when you don't know the whole story.

By all means, explain it to us.

Not sure if teachers would support more than 3 days ~ 3 days is the only option being presented to them.

I thought 6 days or 3 days plus the salary freeze were also presented.

I'll try hard not to judge, but I'd really like the whole story. I am starting to lose respect for teachers, as a whole. The individual teachers I know, I still respect, but if I found out they were willing to throw their colleagues, and the kids, under the bus, I might change my mind.

I'm looking forward to more information.

There might be more to the story. Maybe other cuts could have been made elsewhere but it is getting commonplace to wonder why people won't take more furlough days. There does come a time when people can't afford to work anymore. Some might be single income families that are already at a breaking point. I think I would have a hard time going to work for free.

It has been reported that the three furlough days is equal to about a 1.6% salary reduction. Form your own opinions if that would or wouldn't push folks past the "breaking point."

Exactly... I have your feelings... in one on one interaction with some of teachers that taught my kids... I reserved judgement... HOWEVER... They run in packs like dogs... the pack is called the Stinking Teachers Union... and just like a good dog that would never hurt a fly... this pack is just about as vicious....

But what I know... only been through this crap with the district before...

On the bright side, it could be MUCH worse. The Sacramento City USD's teachers' union is so far out of touch it's insane.

Additional options as you described were presented to union leadership. However, only the (3) day option was agreed upon by leadership to be presented to their membership for voting. Keep in mind they did survey their members for direction.

Agree with David H- so happy not to in the situation Sac City is ~ grateful we are negotiating

I know... I read that story... geez... and the union is griping about having to pay even a small amount for a co-pay...

My co-pay is $50.00 to see my doctor at Kaiser ON TOP OF MY MONTHLY KAISER BILL... and they are complaining about $15.00 or $25.00? with every thing else paid for...?

"Get outa here...!!!"

It's time for hard ball with the union JoAnne...

There's going to be a big back lash coming up in November as you know... and I don't think folks are ready for a teachers union that represents the highest paid teachers in the nation from coming down just a bit... when folks in the private sector are not getting anywhere near the same benefits....

Union reps only want to present 3 days of furlough, amounting to not much more than a 1.5% increase. They will not bring a 4, 5 or 6-day furlough nor salary schedule freezes to their members. All of those options were presented to the union. 3 days will almost save the middle school electives. Governor's May Budget revision is no worse or better than expected.

Yes, presented and not accepted for proposal to the union as a whole. Many teachers' unions in CA have agreed to 5-7 furlough days, but not FCUSD.
"Sometimes on purpose and sometimes by accident, teachers' unions have a long history of working against the interests of children in the name of job security for adults. And Democrats in particular have a history of facilitating this obstructionism in exchange for campaign donations and votes." . . .Amanda Ripley re "Waiting for Superman" movie.

Likely $ 60 to $ 80 dollars pre tax per month.

Thanks for the info, Teresa. What a shame.

I sure hope the_professor provides some insight. I'd love to give the teachers' union the benefit of the doubt...
