A driver still has to stop at the red light, but you're right, there's a separate acceleration lane once you turn right.
Yeah - I drive that route a lot and most of the time, if I'm behind someone, they won't turn right until the light goes green, even though the turn lane is there for them to safely do a right on red. Blowing the horn is of no use since the driver obviously wouldn't understand why I did so.

I don't frequent that intersection, and I'm not really seeing what the problem is.Yeah - I drive that route a lot and most of the time, if I'm behind someone, they won't turn right until the light goes green, even though the turn lane is there for them to safely do a right on red. Are you expecting a car to turn right on red, with traffic coming, so they can stop and wait in that little merging lane 15 feet down the road? I understand that's the right thing to do, but I wouldn't get in a huff over waiting 1 or 2 car lengths further back than I ought to.

You are right, they legally have the right to be discourteous to the drivers behind them and unnecessarily hold up traffic if they want to.I am just going to argue that even if there is a good turn lane and scoop, that a driver doesn't have to make a right turn on a red light unless they want to.

No, I expect them to merge 20 or 30 feet or more down the road as soon as it is safe to do so, instead of waiting for a written invitation to go.I don't frequent that intersection, and I'm not really seeing what the problem is.

I don't frequent that intersection often, maybe twice a month. I went the other day. There a red light and a green arrow light pointing right. when then green arrow turned off, I figured that meant, "don't turn right now." so I sat at the red light watching for traffic coming from the left (off the bridge). are you saying you would honk at me for not turning right? I wonder if I would be ticketed if there were a police car watching. Irish? Are you there? I'm not willing to risk a ticket to save someone 15 seconds of waiting time.

Unless there is a sign saying "No Right on Red", CA law would be "green arrow" means you have the right of way to go, and red light means stop, then proceed when it is safe to do so. In this instance where there is a merge lane, one should pull forward where they can have a good view and go when the opportunity to merge presents itself instead of camping out waiting for a green light/written invitation. I've never seen someone get a ticket for being overly cautious at an intersection, so I doubt you will get a ticket for not going, but you will raise the ire of those behind you if they see that you have had ample opportunity to proceed and you haven't.I don't frequent that intersection often, maybe twice a month. perhaps. but if someone is new to town, a new driver, an older driver, then I think we all need to chill out a little, relax and wait the 15 seconds it takes for the light to turn. its not a race, after all.

And yet, I could have sworn it's been called the "Rat Race" for decades.perhaps. but if someone is new to town, a new driver, an older driver, then I think we all need to chill out a little, relax and wait the 15 seconds it takes for the light to turn. its not a race, after all.
I understand your point, but it also irks me when drivers ignore the fact that there are other drivers on the road and they should drive in a manner showing courtesy and helping the overall flow of traffic instead of gabbing on the phone, and being a bottleneck wherever they go.

[Irish1, I always forget the lane numbering. Is No. 1 the slow lane or the fast lane?]
