OK. I'm not sure if this is the right forum to post this, so feel free to move it wherever it belongs if this isn't the right place......

Just got my FHS Bulldog Newsletter in my e-mail this evening. While perusing it, I noticed that on page 4, under the heading of "Cautions for Parents", item 1 (Potentially Dangerous Websites), MyFolsom.com is listed......right alongside MySpace.com!!!!!

Here's the link to the newsletter if you want to check this out.....
http://www.folsomhig...0Newsletter.pdf

How do you all feel about this? I was shocked to see it listed.......
I assume full responsibility for my actions, except the ones that are someone else's fault.

Did it provide any reasons why it made that list? Are students using the blogs to bash or bully other students or to provide personal information that could come back to bite them? Or is this just an error on the Bulldog's part?

Mr. Richards feels that websites that allow open discussions (and blogs) can be used by students to bully, harass, and/or threaten students w/o their identity being given.

Here is what it says.....

1. Potentially Dangerous Websites: Two websites have generated issues for parents and students because of the presence of predators that cruise these websites and the negative anonymous comments that are made about and/or exchanged between students that have fueled rumors that lead to fights. These websites are: "myspace.com" and "myfolsom.com". As concerned parents, you probably need to find out what is on these websites and what activities your student is involved with on these websites.

I can understand about the negative anonymous comments part, but I don't like the fact that they've lumped us in with myspace.com and the statement that predators cruise "these" websites.............

I can understand his concern on this, but the way it's worded, it makes it sound like predators are cruising our website...... Perhaps that isn't what was intended, but it sure makes it sound that way.....

It's unfortunate but I am not surprise that we came to this point. Any websites that let posters post anonymously will cause some problems. Myspace.com and myfolsom.com are two well known sites locally. The way we set up now, we can have posters all the way in China who can claim to be a Folsom resident.

We should let people register the way the Elk Grove Website do?

I am a Folsom resident, but I stay in Elk Grove 3 days a week with my in-law. Anyway, Elk Grove has a similar website to our myfolsom.com with about 6 thousand users/posters. The website let you post general topics, but if you want to post more important local topics then you must provide your home address. The website administrator then will send you a registration code to your address through which you can register as a real local poster. It definitely provide some legitimacy as to who you are.

Yes there should be better controls over the ID's - there have been a ton of newbie ID's lately here which are nearly just as bad as anonymous ID's the way they are setup

There should be a "signed" agreement something like the following here when people are setting up new ID's:

While the administrators and moderators of this site will attempt to remove
or edit any generally objectionable material as quickly as possible, it is
impossible to review every message. Therefore you acknowledge that all posts
made to this site express the views and opinions of the author and not the
administrators, moderators or webmaster (except for posts by these people)
and hence will not be held liable.

You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful,
threatening, sexually-orientated or any other material that may violate any
applicable laws. Doing so may lead to you being immediately and permanently
banned (and your service provider being informed). The IP address of all
posts is recorded to aid in enforcing these conditions. Creating multiple
accounts for a single user is not allowed. You agree that the webmaster,
administrator and moderators of this site have the right to remove, edit,
move or close any topic at any time should they see fit. As a user you agree
to any information you have entered above being stored in a database. While
this information will not be disclosed to any third party without your
consent the webmaster, administrator and moderators cannot be held

That sounds perfect! - I see nothing wrong with asking for information like that to validate legitimate users

I heard about this a while ago through a teacher, didn't know it was published. It stemmed from the fact that it's 1) popular and b) people can talk about things.

It was spurred by the thread re: a fight after a dance. The ironic thing is - this site is totally moderated, and this is the reason the site does well. We delete things that refer to people or things like that. I think it was a knee-jerk reaction from someone who is unfamiliar with this website.

I don't anticipate we will lose members over this. If anyone does their homework, they will see this site is a benefit to the community.

I think the best thing you can do as a MyFolsom netizen - email the editor in support of MyFolsom.com!

I wonder if Mr. Richards has actually visited our site. I do like him - he has been around a long time. He has been off base before and admitted to and corrected his mistakes. Perhaps John or one of the moderators could talk with him, answer his questions, and ease any concerns he may have. Let's re-introduce him to our site.

The site is a learning tool for his students. They have access to job postings, places they may need to avoid because of crime, many local residents who can provide information on their professions (counseling), and the knowledge of what is happening in their local community. John has created a site that is an asset to Mr. Richard's place of employment.

Students are allowed, just as we all are, to vent their frustrations within reason. They may not always accept the replys we give them. But at least they read them and reply back, thus opening up the communication channels. In some cases, we could be the only adults that are listening to them - we don't know what is occurring in their home life.

So, if Mr. Richards is reading this -- please look at us again. Join our group. Add replys. We promise to listen to you as well.

that's like saying some teachers are dangerous because they can say/do as they like and it goes unchecked. oh, some are....

what a crack pot comment that this website is dangerous.

life is dangerous. you can cross the street and get hit by a car at any given moment.

carpe diem and caveat emptor.

John, don't change a thing and congrats on being lumped in with myspace. there's no such thing as bad publicity.
"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns -- the ones we don't know we don't know." -- Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld
