Rant ahead....
I am so darned tired of people trying to convince me the Covid-19 virus isn't real!!!! They want to come visit me, they want me to join them for a gathering at their house. They don't wear face masks or distance themselves from others. They are bored with staying home and want everything to go back to normal.
What's with these people??? Don't they listen to the news??? Don't they value their lives??? I'm an old lady that could die from this, if I caught it. Just because they want to ignore what is mandated by the government, doesn't mean I want to.
Yeah, it's the pits staying home and there are times I get tired of it too, but I don't try to convince others they should do as I do.
Do what you are willing to risk your life for! Leave others alone to do what they feel is right for them!
The news is bullcrap fear porn created to make you scared. If you actually look into the SCIENCE, the ACTUAL numbers of both infections and deaths, this is nowhere near the pandemic it ws made out to be. Is it a bad flu? Yes. Will many die from it? Yes (although only about as many as the "regular" flu). If you are high risk, stay home and take precautions.
The factor left out of all the mouthbreathing, fear mongering newscasts is how many will die from suicide, depression, hunger, domestic violence, and the big one, lack of medical care. How many businesses will simply go away? How much revenue will cities and counties lose due to business and home foreclosures? How muh of that money currently goes to local heath services? How many hospitals will close because no one is going to them out of FEAR, and how many of those people will DIE unnecessarily? (Quite a few base don recent numbers from Oregon and NY). How many will die when their local hospital closes and the nearest intensive care is 50 miles away?
You both are wrong. Covid is not the boogie man. It is not deadly like SARS or MERS. It is a highly contagious flu that appears to have a mortality approximately that of the regular flu. Destroying a world economy, small businesses, retirement savings of millions, and ignoring your Constitutional rights IS NOT A RESPONSIBLE, LOGICAL SOLUTION to an annual or biannual infectious disease.

Remains to be seen.
If Georgia re-opening, for example, causes a major spike in Covid-19 cases then we can pretty much conclude the threat is real.
Trump blocks the advice of the CDC.

And he got way more US Troops killed by waiting 8 months to decide things in Iraq............. The surge... Yep, on Bushes for sure in the first place, blame is on GW, Obummer comes in second.... but he does not know a thing about the military or running a business........ Poor "community organizer" that he is.......... Yep, all hat and no Cowboy.... Chicago "Bill Ayers", Chicago Underground trained turd that Obummer is....!
And Obummers punishment........ He has to live with the "He Man" Michelle...... Good luck with that Bro..... ! I feel your pain from my computer chair.... I think I'd put a 9 mm in my skull living with that one....... Less pain...
That is two things, in 8 years, not great ...... Trump, has outrun this wet behind the ear novice ten fold, a hundred fold....!

Well, here we are.....things are starting to open up and there will be new curbs on behavior. At the same time, the news reports 180 kids have come down with weird symptoms and they say they are related to the Corona Virus. Five kids have died, so far. Hmm, just heard they are looking at opening schools next...maybe in the fall?
I've not seen cases go down in California enough to open things up. I know our businesses are suffering, but also know we haven't got a handle on this virus yet. It's a tough call.
How many here are going to go out to eat or go to a bar? Chris, drop in and tell us what you think is safe to do. You know this virus better than any of us here.
Should we all just get back out there and act like everything is A-ok?

This occurred to me.
Ten years from now I hear: "Grandpa, what did you do during the great pandemic of 2020?"
Well kids, I went on line to a thing called the Folsom Forum, and tried to convince some people that
the virus has a mind of it's own and doesn't respond to the wishful thinking displayed by so many
folks there on that forum, many of whom choose to totally ignore science in favor of short-term
business profits. But, did they listen . . .?

Rose, I am probably more scared than knowledgeable on this.... But I do think we need to get moving here as a country and an economy.... Do it right though, social distancing, hand washing, covering your face with a mask... The crazy left wants to stay in isolation for another year and the crazy right wants to open up and live just like we did before. Once again, the right answer is in the middle somewhere..
Killing our economy will kill more people in the end if we don't get back to moving the country forward in my opinion.
And in about 18 months when we have several good vaccines for this bug and many people have been vaccinated along with the ones who have immunity already because they were exposed this life we are living now will be just a memory. We will be eating out, going to the movies, and people will look at you weird once again when you have a surgical mask on in public.

Accepted. Here is my judgement. Texas, a state of 29 million people saw the daily REPORTED infections increase after opening back up rise by 129 from the prior weeks number. The relevant question is whether they tested the same number of people, or if they tested more. It's a statistical drop in the bucket given their population anyway.
Deaths also rose, but since it takes about a month from the time of infection to death, that number has ZERO to do with reopening.
Also, how many people died or will die due to undiagnosed medical issues (due to hospitals being closed), how many will die from suicide, how many will lose their homes and businesses and HEALTHCARE due to the lockdown thereby putting them at higher risk? How many seniors will starve or die from "lack of will to live" after their retirement funds disappear and there are no jobs to supplement their income?

So let's look at some numbers...
Approximately 1 in 300 people have been confirmed to have the virus. Of those, current mortality is ~6% So the "average" chance of dying could be as high as 1 in 4800 (or 0.0002)
But wait! There is more!
If you are less than 70 years old, your odds go way down to 1 in 24000
If you have less than 3 preexisting health conditions, you can make that 1 in 48000.
If you have no preexisting health conditions, you can drop that down to 1 in 2,400,000
If you dont live in NY, you can double those odds.
IN OTHER WORDS, about 150 healthy people under 70 have died from covid in America
AND WE ARE DESTROYING THE ECONOMY FOR THAT.

Good points Joe.
You left out one factor: The known number of cases.
Experts suspect there are between 5 and 50 times the number of people who have actually had the virus,
were asymptomatic, and were not aware of it.
That brings the incidence WAY DOWN to an insignificant percentage.
What the question becomes then is "Why is this happening?"
The only explanation, in my mind, anyway, is that this is some kind of cosmic event.

I'm so glad we killed the world economy with a shut down....
But WHO officials now say that while asymptomatic spread can occur, it is not the main way it’s being transmitted.
“From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual,” Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO’s emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said at a news briefing from the United Nations agency’s Geneva headquarters. “It’s very rare.”
