I have been thinking the same thing- especially the marching band competitions and potentially Drum and Bugle Corps competitions.

Band and Corps use their flags and uniform colors in contrast to a Green Field to display their precision as viewed in the stands... and a deep blue field could certainly mess that up ...

Not sure how much revenue the School or district get from the other events, but hopefully the HS was not selfish when choosing the colors and looked at all other potential venues for using the field.

Guess FHS will need to use Red - or White gowns for graduation from now on so you can at least get a picture of your child ...

I don't know, the floating head pictures would be pretty funny.

I sure hope the powers at be would have considered all these things.  If it turns out the stadium looses business because of the color of the turf and the school and surrounding companies suffer financially, some people need to loose their jobs.

I'm guessing that everything will turn out fine and Folsom High will be known as having quite a distinctive field.

The life of a turf field is generally up to 10 years. That is 10 year of 8hours of use per day, which frankly, Prairie City Stadium  field doesn't even come close to getting. The only team that practices on the field on a regular basis is the football team.  Folsom highs boys and girls soccer teams do not practice at the field, they practice at Kemp 1 and 2.  My son played 4 years on FHS soccer team and my daughter played on girls at FHS and they both always practiced at Kemp. Doesn't really make sense, but maybe Spring football takes priority over girls soccer. Last couple of years the girls teams have been playing home games at Prairie City Stadium, but they've also played at Kemp and Livermore as well.  I think I  read in newspaper that Coach Richardson made trip to Boise State and saw the blue field and thought Folsom field should be blue.. can't  verify but if that is true, wow does Richardson have pull or what? What's next Coach Wall demanding that the basketball court be blue as well....

As for Kemp 1 and 2, both those fields are used a lot, by not only soccer and lacrosse, but also Sedgway polo, flag football, countless clinics and adult soccer leagues. They are either closing in  on or are well past their 10 years, but unfortunately the city of Folsom hasn't budgeted for new turf. City did have  cell phone tower $$$ earmarked  for the fields, but they diverted the money elsewhere during the budget crunch a  couple of years ago.  Don't forget Livermore Turf field is not vey old, but it gets way overused and its only a matter of time before it too will need to be replaced.

On a separate note anyone been to Folsom Lake College and seen their new soccer field? Sorry off topic, but had  to chime in.

Probably not because classroom teachers won't see a penny of additional money. As a teacher I appreciate the kindness of the donations families make, but if you don't feel you want to donate just ignore the plea. :)

I don't like that the district doesn't provide basic supplies, but I would rather donate directly to classrooms than see a teacher pull money out of their own pockets.

I just saw in The Folsom Telegraph that The Rotary Club will be giving 10 teachers mini-grants of $250 each for classroom and student needs .  You just have to apply by Oct. 1.

michael@mouriskiperez.com or call 983-1160.  The Rotary Club does a lot of good in town.

I also noticed the Folsom Cordova Education Foundation is having a fundraiser this September.  I'm not really sure if they concentrate on teacher requests, though.  The 990 EZ looks like the bulk of it went to the library for Internet services? and a $17,000 scholarship.  I'm more than happy to admit I'm wrong if someone else reads the 990EZ differently.

I looked at their teacher requests at sageapple.com and found one teacher from Sutter Middle has a request in but could find no requests from teachers at FHS and none from Theodore Judah.  Maybe they need to get the word out to the teachers to put in requests.

Sorry for being off topic.

OK, quit complaining and come watch the scrimmage today at 6:00 and see the field for yourself.  Time for some community support and HS football.

I actually took my first look at the field about an hour ago.  Man, it is blue - REALLY blue.  My first reaction was that it won't "look" like football without a green football field.

On the other hand, I really don't care.

I am a grant writer! I have had several Donors Choose proposals funded and last year won an award from the Rotary Club. I received word just this week my FCEF proposal would be funded too! I have been incredibly blessed! Over the years I have been granted a document camera, smart scanner, language arts centers, math centers, and a digital di-cut machine (shared with co-workers), two iPads, and Otterbox iPad cases and headphones. FCEF is allowing me to acquire a Kindergarten rug, paint drying rack, book displays and other necessary items for a brandnew Kindergarten classroom. Just last night I began another Donors Choose proposal that I'll make active after September 1st when Cheveron does their major funding event.

I'm happy to hear the money is getting to the classrooms, too.  I'm sorry I won't have much to give this year.

I don't get on here that often anymore, mostly due to the anonymous sniping.  But in answer to the good questions about costs and cost differences, here is some useful information.

Folsom High - $736,864 (includes turf, site work, drainage, blue field, e-layer, and taxes)
Cordova High - $777,081 (includes turf, site work, center logo, end zone lettering, e-layer, long jump and taxes)

The adopted budget does not actually show a $300,000 cost difference between the two fields.  The $300,000 difference is actually between the reserve balances in the cell tower accounts, not expenditures. $800,000 was budgeted for each field.

The turf alone at Folsom High cost more than at Cordova High in large part because it has 12,000 more square feet to cover.

The cell tower fund was set aside at its inception for the purpose of maintaining these facilities so that the district would not need to use general fund money.  For FHS, that was part of the plan when the stadium was first built.  It's a good idea to plan for maintenance and repairs of capital projects when you can.

For the person who asked about the stadium name, it was named Prairie City Stadium because it sits directly on top of the old Prairie City, which was then a neighboring town of Folsom.

How much cost difference was the blue turf,  "per square yard cost" compared to the green color turf,  "per square yard"?

You really think you'll ever get a straight answer that you can trust?

Astrosmurf!

I just thought that up.  Probably someone else already had.  Anyhow, use it if you want.

Quick googling reveals there was actually a Smurf by that name, also that Boise State people have come up with it before.  But I didn't find any Folsom related stuff so that means I can claim some originality...
