Lasers seem like they'd be great in a moderately low light situation (and a lot of fun for plinking/general target shooting), but not necessarily so great in complete darkness for a home defense situation. Two problems in real darkness - you have no way of identifying what exactly your target is and the laser will give away your position. I'm thinking that if I'm going to give away my position, I at least want a very bright flashlight to do it, since that would impair the BG's vision temporarily and will let me get a good look at what I'm aiming at. Night sights are a good idea as well, and I can't see any drawback.

I wouldn't be surprised by that.

BTW, I haven't seen that Wild Sports coupon in The Bee in quite some time. What's up with that??

Also, any thoughts on night sights and/or lasers ??

I think it was in Sunday (can't remember which section) recently (usually Thursday Sports). It keeps moving around now..... Need to check every day if you need the coupon. smile.gif

Big debate on night sights -- one perspective is that if it's so dark that night sights are useful, it's probably not good enough to determine if the target if friendly or foe. On the other hand, in my opinion, night sights don't hurt. There are lots of different types of sights (standard or glowing). Sights take some research and tryouts. It's like choosing a tie. Look at Dawson, Tru-Glo, Mepro, Warren Tactical and others. You can also combine Tru-glo (front) w/ Mepro or other sights (rear). And you can use a brighter color up front (ie - green) w/ darker in rear (orange). You want the front to be very easy and quick to pickup.

Lasers -- I'm not sure. I don't think, in general, it's good to rely on any device that may fail when you need it. For HD, I'd rely on practice, point shooting/CAR or other quick targeting methods, followed by normal sights, followed by lasers and other devices. That being said, I just installed CTC grips on my P220 -- haven't tried it yet. It's something that may be useful (ie - multiple bad guys so you can target w/out "tunnel vision" on the sights) but I'm not going to rely on them.

Side subject -- lights (ie - flashlight) is another debatable topic. Rail mounted lights are convenient and allows you to keep one hand free. On the other hand, it provides a great target for bad guys. One theory is that it's better to carry a flashlight that is held away from the body. Again, lots of debate on this.....

+1 on both points. No tool or add-on equipment can substitute for practice, practice, practice. On my HD handgun (the apparently difficult to find Model 19), I have the CTC laser installed, as well as a rail-mounted TLR-1 tactical light. The light has a momentary on feature, which is helpful for just a quick flash to fill the room with a bright light so that you can 1) stun whomever is stumbling around your living room, and 2) see whomever is stumbling around our living room. If you've never fired a handgun in the pitch dark, you'll have no idea how incredibly bright the muzzle flash is and how disoriented you'll be when you try to reacquire the target. I actually like the balance of the gun with the TLR-1 installed and I've noticed it helps reduce the muzzle flip, which also speeds your follow up shot.

But, as tsukiji said, it's all debatable. Best bet may be to try 'em out on someone else's handgun and see if you like it.

Nahhh. Aside from power, I also need something I can conceal, if you know what I mean.

But thanks for chiming in.

Yo ChipShot. I'm probably heading to the range tomorrow afternoon (after lunch-ish).

If you wanna try a P226 or P220, you're welcome to come with me. PM me if you're interested.

Okay guys, I took my P220 with my newly installed CTC laser grips to the range today (It's been about 6 months since my last visit). I've forgotten how the P220 was - still getting used to it -- after today, I think I've got about 400-500 rounds through it now.

Focused on shooting at 10 yards today:

1) With sights, I'm a little off target but the group is pretty tight (about 2.5-3 inch group using a 5" diameter target). I'm consistently either doing the wrong thing and/or the sights are off a tad. Most likely me -- btw, I'm getting far sighted in addition to my near sightedness so sighting at 10 yards and higher is getting tough. For range work, I'm using a special Rx that allows me to see the front sight but distance 10+ yards starts to get blurry. Anyway, I think this is a pretty good start for 4-5 hundred rounds.

2) With the CTC laser, I'm more on target laterally but low (CTC was out of the box, I can adjust for elevation). I'm going to keep using as-is for now until I'm pretty sure I need to adjust the laser. But the groups are basically on target and pretty tight. Overall, pretty happy with the CTC laser out of the box - bright beam, easy to use, accurate. Again, I'm not going to rely on it for HD but if it's working, it could be pretty handy.

Yo ChipShot,

There's a thread on SigForum about opinions on the best 9mm. Here is some feedback from posters (high volume):

In no specific order:
1. SIG P228
2. Glock G19
3. SIG P250
4. SIG P226
5. Glock G17

SIG X5 Tactical
SIG P226
SIG p228
SIG P229 Elite
HK P2000

1) Sig P228
2) Kahr PM9
3) Glock 26
4) Beretta 92FS
5) Walther P99

1. Glock 17
2. Glock 34
3. Sig P239
4. XD
5. Springfield 1911 in 9mm

1. P7M8 - my favorite 9mm pistol of all time
2. P226 - most accurate DA service pistol I've ever shot
3. G19 - still the best all around CCW weapon on the market, IMHO

4. PM9 - the ultimate "pocket" pistol for the average shooter (e.g. people without enough money and time to deal with Rorhbaugh)
5. Hi-Power - large, heavy, slightly odd trigger system, but sexy as hell when dressed up right, and accurate as all get out
