Just stumbled across this thread. Honestly, I can't believe people are still so fired up about the name of a bridge! Yeah, "Johnny Cash Bridge" or whatever would have been cooler than what we ended up with but in the final analysis it's still just a structure of reinforced concrete and asphalt. I, for one, am just happy that the darn thing will be open soon!

It is great that we can count on you to let us know when we don't meet your expectations. We will endeavor not to let you down in the future.

I don't see it as a "snooty Bay Area" thing. It's a bridge. It's appropriately named. Yes, that little stretch of river is still considered part of Folsom Lake. It's weird, I know. I don't pretend to understand.

For the record, I voted for Johnny Cash bridge. I thought it might be cool. But when it was named something else I shrugged and said "no big deal." I just find it funny how invested some of you are in the naming of this thing. Dressing in black? Secret signals with Kerri? Cash look a likes? Maybe you'll change some minds, but I doubt it. I'm not so sure your multitudes of supporters are as great as you think. After all, it's just a stretch of road. As long as it gets people from A to B they don't really care what it's named. I doubt more than 5% of those that cross the "new bridge" know its proper name.

We'll never know for sure what the community thinks since the council picked the name they all wanted not really caring if the community liked it. (excluding Kerri) Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there were more Johhny Cash suggestions when the bridge naming contest was going on than Lake Crossing ones.

As far as being invested, that's the beauty of it. It doesn't cost a cent to ignore what they've named it without us and call it what we want, ignoring their unfortunate choice.

I'm sure Johnny thanks you for your vote.

That is the point. 100% of them would know the name if it was the Johnny Cash Memorial Bridge.

Probably true, I wouldn't be surprised if it's <1%.

but as for the new new bridge, even though I didn't vote for JCM, it's a far better name than the one Miklos picked.

My choice was in keeping it short and applicable, it's near the dam, it replaces the dam road, so why not call it the dam bridge.

Folsom Lake Bridge would perhaps be a more appropriate name for a bridge.

I did notice the latest city newsletter used the "formal" name abundantly. I assume it's not well-known and they're trying to get the word out about what the Johnny Cash Memorial Bridge is really known as, on paper.

I am 1-5%. What is the name of the bridge below the Rainbow Bridge? For that matter, does the ped\bike bridge above Rainbow have a name?

I am serious about not recalling the names but point here is a bridge should have a easy to remember and be appropriate to its location. JCM although long, would be a good name.

Historic Truss Bridge?

The old "new" bridge is called Lake Natoma Crossing. Which somewhat makes sense. BECAUSE IT FREAKING CROSSES LAKE NATOMA!

Quote from the Truss bridge link above:
QUOTE
there is a sign on each end of the bridge which reads "$5 fine for driving over this bridge faster than a walk. $25 fine for driving more than 20 head of horses, 50 head of cattle or 200 sheep, hogs or goats over this bridge at one time."

While no one is likely to be driving any herds across the bridge, I wish they would up the fine for bicyclists and enforce it that ignore the driving faster than a walk across the bridge portion.

That right there sums up perfectly why so many people are not content with the name decision.

to me this old bridge name thing is kind of symbolic, an example of the distain most of the council have for the views of the "little people" and a bit of stupidity as well (folsom lake crossing doesn't cross folsom lake)

A little protest would be in a way like the Boston Tea Party. I would bet a little fun protest would get some media attention cause things like protests are more exciting than some boring speeches.

Lastly it would P.ss off the boys to have a little circus sideshow during their finest hour.
I had an internet friend look around for Johnny Cash masks and didn't find any. They had Saddam and John McCain he said

He suggested that we get a Johnny Cash face picture and put in on a card with a stick and hold it up to your face so the camers would see 100 Johnny Cash faces

Its been said before when you travel and mention Folsom they connect with Johnny Cash and I am pretty sure if we had the bridge and some store which had cash shirts and bobble dolls etc a lot of tourists who are country fans would stop by folsom to go over the bridge and see the prison.

Its not that folsom has gotten snooty and forgot its past with the old power house and even the Rodeo. Heck snooty folks don't like the smell of a Rodeo

I believe that if we can make it known as the unofficial Johnny Cash Bridge, then tourists could make it a stop, walk out over the middle of it and have their picture taken with the prison in the background. It's a gorgeous view up and down the canyon, really spectacular. That bridge deserves a good name!

Excuse me, but where does this piece of info come from. If that stretch of the American River is a part of any lake, it should be Lake Natoma, not Folsom Lake. Please site your source as to why you say it is considered a part of Folsom Lake.

Dude, you just hit it out of the park. In addition to the arrogance and stupidity you mention, there's maybe also egotism (real word?) at play here:

There was a rumor swirling, and I don't know if it's true, that they wanted the name "Folsom" in the bridge because, goodness, we wouldn't want Granite Bay to try to claim they had a part in building it, or any other surrounding community that uses the bridge for that matter. They wanted to make sure Folsom got all the credit (and by extension the City Council).

I hope I'm wrong about that, but I seem to recall that being a factor in the decision that was mentioned. Maybe someone in the know can set me straight if I'm remembering it incorrectly.
"Here's the last toast of the evening: Here's to those who still believe. All the losers will be winners, all the givers will receive. Here's to trouble-free tomorrows, may your sorrows all be small. Here's to the losers: bless them all
