Bush to Seek $40B for Next Katrina Phase
By DAVID ESPO, AP Special Correspondent 34 minutes ago

WASHINGTON -
President Bush intends to seek as much as $40 billion to cover the next phase of relief and recovery operations from Hurricane Katrina, congressional officials said Tuesday as leading lawmakers and the White House pledged to investigate an initial federal response widely condemned as woefully inadequate.
One week after the hurricane inflicted devastation of biblical proportions on the Gulf Coast, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the total tab for the federal government may top $150 billion.

Lets see if Bushco can pull through on this.
Surely the amount is politically motivated due to HIS lack of action in the first week of this situation.... and there is surely no excuse for that - other than He was on VACATION and had other things to deal with-
Hope this money actually gets to those most in need- the Poor black community in and around the area ... Not the rich white living now at a Hilton at $150 per day....

Barbara Bush: It's Good Enough for the Poor
John Nichols Tue Sep 6, 1:08 PM ET
The Nation -- Finally, we have discovered the roots of George W. Bush's "compassionate conservatism."
On the heels of the president's "What, me worry?" response to the death, destruction and dislocation that followed upon Hurricane Katrina comes the news of his mother's Labor Day visit with hurricane evacuees at the Astrodome in Houston.
Commenting on the facilities that have been set up for the evacuees -- cots crammed side-by-side in a huge stadium where the lights never go out and the sound of sobbing children never completely ceases -- former First Lady Barbara Bush concluded that the poor people of New Orleans had lucked out.
"Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this, this is working very well for them," Mrs. Bush told American Public Media's "Marketplace" program, before returning to her multi-million dollar Houston home.
On the tape of the interview, Mrs. Bush chuckles audibly as she observes just how great things are going for families that are separated from loved ones, people who have been forced to abandon their homes and the only community where they have ever lived, and parents who are explaining to children that their pets, their toys and in some cases their friends may be lost forever. Perhaps the former first lady was amusing herself with the notion that evacuees without bread could eat cake.

Hurricane fallout hurts Bush, could hurt Republicans
By Alan Elsner Tue Sep 6,12:41 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Hurricane Katrina delivered a heavy political blow to
President George W. Bush, potentially crippling his second-term domestic agenda and undermining Republican prospects in next year's congressional elections, political analysts said on Tuesday.
"There's going to be significant and long-term damage to Bush, especially because this disaster comes on the heels of a slow bleeding of his approval ratings over the past year that accelerated over the summer," said Cal Jillson, a political scientist at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.
Before the hurricane struck, Bush's approval ratings had fallen to some of the lowest of his presidency -- 45 percent in Fox News and Gallup polls taken at the end of last month and 41 percent in a CBS poll. Voters were expressing growing disenchantment with the war in Iraq and high gasoline prices.

I for one, am sorry to hear that the mother of GW has such perverse ideas and comments. No doubt that is where GW gets his lack of compasion and timely support of the human toll that this calamity has created comes from...

Please, this is NOT the story there.
I heard the sound bite on the radio this morning. Definitely not a 'sarcastic interpretation.' More lilke a representation of how the family feels about the 'underprivileged'.

Hmm- I dont see anyone bashing Bush- - maybe his ill informed actions and his handlers and his agencies very late response to this situation--- surely- as it is well deserved...
Thousands have died to his in- action-
Can you disagree with that ?
Cheers

A COMPLETE, TOTAL AND UTTER BULLs--- LIE. New Orleans has existed for 300 years and no one ever did anything in that time to protect the city. No president, no governor, no mayor.
Sorry, but blaming the sitting president for a disaster no one addressed for three centuries means you are either insane, stupid, and just a impudent old man...and I don't think you are crazy or stupid.

Mexican Army Convoys Bringing Aid to U.S.
By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer 2 minutes ago
http://news.yahoo.co...HNlYwMlJVRPUCUl
MEXICO CITY - A Mexican army aid convoy set out for the U.S. border Tuesday, carrying water treatment plants, mobile kitchens and supplies to feed the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Large Mexican flags were taped to many of the 35 green-painted Mexican army trucks and tractor trailers as they rumbled northward, in what apparently will be the first Mexican military unit to operate on U.S. soil since 1846.
The trucks, carrying 195 unarmed soldiers, officers and specialists, were expected to arrive in Laredo, Texas, sometime Wednesday. From there they are to proceed to Houston, where they will apparently be used to produce water and hot meals.
The convoy included two mobile kitchens that can feed 7,000 people each per day, three flatbed trucks carrying mobile water treatment plants, and 15 trailers of bottled water, blankets and applesauce.
It also includes military engineers, doctors and nurses.

Didn't take long to find a bash.
And you need to blame Congress and the Supreme Court as well for their lack of action, because the last time I checked, there are *three* branches of government.
Also, why not direct your bashings towards Michael Brown, Department of Homeland Security, Louisiana State Civil Defense, Louisiana State Defense Forces, and Kathleen Babineaux Blanco?
BTW, Bush declared an emergency before the hurricane made landfall. Unless you expect him to resign the presidency and take over Brown's position, I don't see how he has been delinquent. Of course, if you could you'd blame him for not using patriot missles and B2 bombers to take out Katrina before she made landfall.

CV no one is blaming the president for the DISASTER, they're blaming him for his lack of leadership/ineffective response, etc, etc, after the disaster struck.
Get a clue.
