So once again, my personal opinion of a good Japanese restaurant is Shoki. The owners are Japanese (the wife is half), the cook is Japanese, the FOOD is Japanese. It's a great atmosphere, awesome sashimi, rolls, and "regular" food.

Chinese-Chinese food isn't greasy at all. American-Chinese food is however because I doubt that the majority of the American people would feel comfortable eating things that are cooked they way the Chinese meant it to be cooked.
I do agree about the Vietnamese food, Thai is good if you don't mind coconut however.

Bel Air is pretty good for fast Chinese food but I was looking for a nice sit down place that's reasonable. It seems all the Chinese places that are really good are in the seedy parts of town.

The best Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants are located near their ethnic population locations to easily serve the people - South Sacramento (yike!). These areas tend to have cheaper rent for businesses too.
I wear bullet proof vest when I go and eat in South Sac.. Love the foods there but I do keep an eye out when I am in these restaurants. I have a good reason - I went to couple funerals for young guys got shot in these areas - South Sac, and Boston.

Another good one----I don't remember the name----is in the Vic's shopping center on American River at Oak Avenue. Jade Palace or something like that.
I haven't been there in some time but at first it seemed your choices were prepared AFTER you ordered so was very fresh and crisp. I do not know how it is now.

What do you consider "seedy"? If you're talking about Sutter Street, it's not seedy, just historic. No more crime there than say at the Folsom Outlets or at Broadstone Marketplace.
If you're talking about East Bidwell near Sutter Middle School or DMV, again, it's part of the older part of town, but again, no more crime there than anywhere else.
Just because a place is not new, fancy, and high priced doesn't make it seedy. What's your definition of seedy.?
Also, you might want to check the county health department reports on some of the restaurants before you go there.
