None of those buildings are 7 stories high, sitting atop a hill.

With a 70 ft. minaret, this is going to be a VERY prominent building.  I think it's reasonable for all of us to worry about whether we will like it.

View Post

First- it would not be sitting atop a hilll- the land at that site will be leveled to street level as are most of the locations around- ( so take off 10 or 15 feet) ..
Second- when you look out from your house - you wont see it at all--
third- most others will not see it either- except a few houses behind the industrial area on Sibly and Lembi---
Oh we might be able to see if from our platform at the top of the wall backing up to prairie city rd, IF we climbed up... but doubt we would see it from the rest of our yard....
For the most part - the only ones that will see it are a few houses ( less than 10 ) in the vicinity and the businesses near- or those driving up Sibley....

So what is the concern- besides- I think the uniqueness of it would draw some good attention .... More positive than negative...

When will we get a good ole Russian building- Love them ....

Interesting. I did not receive such a flyer. I wonder if they targeted people who live in the Sibley/Glenn area.

I wonder if you should consider notifying the local media (the Folsom Telegraph)? I'm sure they would be most interested in pursuing that story. Also, should the police be notified (did you feel the intent of the flyer was to stir up hostility and aggression toward the mosque-goers)?

The minaret is like a spire or a steeple, so the entire building won't be 70 feet or 7 stories high.

Folsom500,

How do you know all this?

When I looked at that lot, it looked as though it would be difficult to level. (It would take some heavy-duty retaining walls with that big slope in the back).

Why do you assume no one will be able to see it except <10 surrounding houses? 70 feet is quite high -- I'm not even aware of any churches in Folsom that have such high spires.

I guess we shall see what we shall see (in more than one sense).

I have scoped it out- and understand something of the lay of the land.. You could also do this.... it is not hard to figure out---
Drive over there and see what you can see-
Most of the houses in the area are set back and few have a view in the direction of the Spire--

And actually is will be a nice addition to the sky scape of the local area for those that CAN see it -

The lay of the land is very similar to what is on the opposite corner of Sibley and Levy.

I agree - it will be an improvement to that corner, and I'll maybe have a view of the minaret. Fine with me.

If you could get 50 sovereign entities to all agree on the same thing, I'd buy you dinner. smile.gif
The first amendment clearly applies only to the federal government, it says "Congress shall make no law...". It doesn't say anything about the states. I'm not saying this is good or bad, it just IS.

Obviously the federal government, in their infinite wisdom, has ignored the text of the first amendment and decided to make laws in two areas that are unconstitutional:

1) Taking the power away from the states and people to create laws regarding religion and speech.
2) Congress makes laws themselves that limit speech (campaign finance law, hate speech, workplace speech restrictions, etc.).

If we were talking about a strip club, then i'd understand the need to discuss the implications of the location and the attention it brings.

But we're talking about a mosque, a place of worship that the muslims of Folsom have earned through hard work and dedication. They've come here from all over the world at INTEL'S request, the least they deserve is a place where they can worship freely within a building which inherits its architectural heritage from their ancestors.

Why is this town so focused on personal needs? You don't like the look of a mosque? Who cares, they're going to build it anyway and you'll learn to deal with it. Just like i've learned to deal with stupid hanger looking thing at the corner of Bidwell and Riley.

As early as the ninth century, in India, Hindus helped Christians build churches and in turn benefited themselves with Education. These churches were built in the fashion of other churches, not the Indian tradition of architecture. It's amusing how in India there are Mosques (built with minarets and all,) Churches(with bell towers, stained glass windows, and Crosses,) and Hindu temples (with their wall sculptures,) all within looking distance. And yet, in Folsom, we can't stand one mosque to be built in some corner lot where no one will even see it unless driving by.

It's shameful.

uber, pardon me if I have the wrong person, but aren't you the one who is always railing against gay people?

I find it curious that you are the voice of tolerance when it comes to the mosque, yet you have no such welcoming attitude toward gays.

I'm just curious what in your background or philosophy makes you so open to one, but so close-minded to the other. Is it your religious tradition? Your parents' views? Or ...?
