It probably also has a lot to do with the demographics of the viewing audience.

I bet the audience is quite skewed toward middle-age and up. A lot of grandmas are saying, "That Taylor is so doggone cute, and he sings my kind of music!" and picking up their phones.

The voting audience may not overlap very much with the people who will actually go out and buy albums... Was it Camay who said he called in 200 votes for Taylor?? Camay, do you buy albums??!

I agree that the audience may be skewed toward middle-age and up (I'm in that demographic). I probably called in around 250 votes for Taylor. Solid dialing/redialing for a full hour, then my fingers and hands got tired. I would definately buy an album by Taylor. Not so much for Chris, although I agreed that he was good in that genre. It's just not the genre I typically buy. I have also purchased Kelly Clarkson's cds, and Clay Aiken's CD.

The other thing they always stress when something like this happens, is that you ALWAYS need to vote for the person you think should win. Sometimes, people feel sorry for the underdogs, and make the assumption that their favorite is so popular that they don't need to vote for them....unfortunately, if too many people do that, then the results turn out as they did last night. Plus, there are people who watch AI, and loved Chris, but never voted! And today they're shocked.

I assume full responsibility for my actions, except the ones that are someone else's fault.

wow 250 votes - thats a heckuva lot of redialing - I only vote once when I call in and its always for Katherine although last week I voted for her and Chris - I'll have to remember to do multiple votes next time...

I'm the opposite - I don't know what music Taylor could come out with that I would buy - but I would go see him in concert. I would buy any album Chris made and he's probably going to be making one soon. I bought Kelly Clarkson's CD's and they're great. I got one Clay Aiken CD by accident in a CD club and I didn't like it at all - I also got the Bo Bice CD and its only so so...some songs are good other aren't.

I think you nailed it - lots of folks thought Chris had it in the bag but the votes are what make or break them, doesn't matter what Simon or the other judges say because its the peoples vote that counts.

I didn't really think Katherine's performances were very good this week but she's got the best voice of all of them so I called in a vote for her just to help keep her in the running.

I purchase CD's now and then and I would go see Taylor in concert.

OK everyone.....Wake up and get your dialing fingers ready.......

It's American Idol night!

According to a poster on another forum, (and some other places as well), here are the songs for tonight's show...One was chosen by each singer, one was chosen by one of the judges, and one was chosen by Clive Davis.

Taylor:
Randy's choice: You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker
Taylor's choice: Try A Little Tenderness by Otis Redding
Clive Davis' choice: Walking in Memphis by Marc Cohn

Kat:
Simon's choice: Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Kat's choice: Man, I Feel Like a Woman by Shania Twain
Clive's choice: First Time I Saw Your Face by Celine Dion

Elliot:
Paula's choice: What You Won't Do For Love by Bobby Caldwell
Elliot's Choice: The Sun is Going to Shine Again by Ray Charles
Clive's Choice: Open Arms by Journey

This should be a very good show tonight. If you watch, and have a favorite, be sure to vote for them!
I know I will be.....

Good choices by Clive except for Elliot's. That song sucks and Elliot is not a Journey cover man - I hope I'm wrong cause my fav is Elliot. I also like Taylor, he makes me smile just thinking of him. But Elliot passes the radio test better.

Simon Cowell makes his 'Idol' prediction

NEW YORK (AP) -- Simon Cowell predicts that the gray-haired Taylor Hicks will be the next "American Idol."

"I'm going to say he's the favorite, but what do I know?" Cowell told Jay Leno on NBC's "Tonight Show" Monday.

Cowell had earlier predicted that rocker Chris Daughtry, who was booted off "Idol" in an upset last week, would be among the show's three remaining finalists.

Instead, along with the 29-year-old Hicks, an Alabama native, the remaining contestants on the Fox program are sultry crooner Katharine McPhee and Elliot Yamin.

Cowell expects Yamin to be the next to go, resulting in a Hicks-McPhee finale on May 23-24. Though Cowell thought McPhee, 21, should have been voted off last week, he thinks she'll last one more round.

"Based on last week, absolutely she should have gone," said Cowell. "But, you know, she's got a fighting chance. I think she'll make the final, and I'll tell you why: because I'm choosing one of her songs this week."

The 27-year-old Yamin might not have Cowell's vote, but he has a fan in judge Paula Abdul.

Last week, Abdul told Teen People magazine, "I am going to be honest with you -- I want Elliot to win."

After performances Tuesday evening, the remaining "Idol" field of three will be cut down to two on Wednesday (9 p.m. EDT).

OK. I just found a message board on the East Coast that has a thread that was being written through the entire show.....Some of the song choices are different than what the poster I had seen earlier had listed....I've marked the differences in red.....

Elliot:
1st Song - Chosen by Clive Davis - singing 'Open Arms' by Journey
2nd Song - Paula has chosen 'What You Won't Do For Love' by Bobby Caldwell
3rd song - Singer's choice - singing 'I Believe To My Soul' by Ray Charles, the Donnie Hathaway version

Kat:
1st Song -Chosen by Clive Davis - 'I Believe I Can Fly' by R Kelly
2nd Song - 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow', chosen by Simon
3rd Song - Contestant choice - singing 'I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues'

Taylor:
1st Song - Clive Davis has chosen 'Dancing In The Dark' by Bruce Springsteen
2nd Song - Randy's pick - 'You Are So Beautiful' by Joe Cocker
3rd Song - Taylor's song choice - 'Try A Little Tenderness' by Otis Redding

Just goes to show you....you can't always believe everything you see on a message board!

When I heard Simon say the name of the song I figured he wanted her to be next to go and that that song would cinch it... but WOW! That was awsome! We went back and watched her sing it again. That is the first time we had done that this season.

Dave, how much does a Clay Akin Cd go for these days?

I'd guess around 10 bucks - I'm sure its de-valued somewhat since its release (just a guess anyways)
