Had this great stew my mother-in-law makes, with chicken, garbanzos, spinach and butternut squash. It is served over what she calls cous couzou, which I think is just a variation of cous cous. It is prepared like it and cooked like it.

Tastes great!

Blech! Brussel Sprouts, sounds like a waste of bacon and shallots.

Now if you take the bacon & shallots, and sprinkle them over melted cheese covered cauliflower, that would sound tasty.

Hmm, then again, it's been 40 years since I last had brussel sprouts, I used to hate cabbage back then as well.

Maybe, just maybe, I should give 'em a try again.

But liver & onions is a different story, nope, never ever will I eat liver again. It's just plain gross according to my texture and tastebud sensors in my mouth.
I would rather be Backpacking

Hmmm... we had the Pioneer Woman's tomato pesto pizza... with Winco dough. I just wish the Zittel's still had their tomatoes... but hey, it was still YUMMY!

I too was never a fan of brussel sprouts. However as an adult I added then into my repetoire because they are soo good for you. I get them seasonly at the farmers market on the large stalk they grow on. They are absolutely fresh off the farm. I steam them first and then slice and sautee with the bacon and shallots in some olive oil and butter and I have to say they are wonderful. They taste SOO much better than I remember them as a child!
Your cauliflower, cheese and bacon sounds delish. I will have to try that.
Sadly (as I am trying to become a vegetarian) Bacon makes everything taste good.

OK, I've tried Brussel sprouts a few times since my last post on this topic, and a couple of times they were OK, but the majority of the time, bitter, more bitter than I care for.

So for tonight, a homemade version of rice 'a' roni with polish sausage chopped up in it.
No package mixes, just orzo & rice cooked with butter, broth and spices served with a side salad.
I would rather be Backpacking

Cut (a substantial amount) off the bottom of Brussel sprouts to make them less bitter.

Also buy organic fresh produce, not store-bought shipped from who knows where crap.

I agree! We love Brussels sprouts, we even sometimes bring 'em to have while camping. The way we make them is to first trim them, then blanch them whole, then cut them in half and saute them in garlic, butter and herbs.

Yum. We frequently do a sauted brussel sprout and roast chestnut dish. Makes a fantastic Thanksgiving side.
