today, this route takes 11 mins or more and is 5 miles long, during rush hour it could be more like 20 minutes
Google doesn't know about the new bridge opening yet.

This week will be the real test for how the new bridge will be used during commute times. Wonder what effect the change in traffic patterns will have. Bill Z, let us know if you have more traffic through your hood.

Although, it was far more scenic.

Was it school traffic or Hwy 50 commuters?

I was at the meeting that the bridge got named. This is kind of how it went:
Residents: Cash Crossing
Miklos, King, Starsky: No, No... Folsom needs to be in the name, we made it happen, not Johnny Cash. Folsom Dam Bridge. No, they closed the dam to create this mess, we won't give them the satisfaction. Folsom Lake. Folsom Lake Crossing, that's it. All in favor?
Miklos, King, Starky. Aye
Morin: I don't care. I guess so. Whatever.
Howell: Definitely not.
King: The "aye's" have it. So it's Folsom Lake Crossing
Howell: That doesn't even make sense!
Miklos, Starsky: Sorry Kerri, you're outvoted.
It kind of happened that way. I don't think they thought it through - they wanted the vote over and done with quickly and I am betting they regret naming it something that doesn't make sense. They of course will never admit that, but I think deep down they know they screwed up. I also think it was a dumb coincidence that a resident threw this name in to consideration. City Council didn't even vote on names, they voted on a theme and made a name.

If they didn't vote on the names then how could Scott Farquhar win? I was under the impression from previous threads that the contest was set aside and the Council created their own name. I was very surprised to see Scott's picture and announcement that he won in the March/April Folsom News Letter.
I don't want to take anything away from Scott - but from what you said above indicates they did not pick the name of the bridge from the contest entries. Did they determine the name at that council meeting... and then look at the entries hoping that someone had submitted Folsom Lake Crossing?

Granite City (original name of Folsom) was thought too close to Granite Bay
Cash was vetoed
Dam was vetoed b/c of USBOR
Folsom Lake was the "winner". I think "Crossing" was some quasi-attempt to appease the residents, though the only reason Crossing was put under consideration because Cash Crossing had a nice ring to it. The whole contest was not really a part of the process, apart from the fact that the 4 "themes" were the buckets of popular names submitted.
...but that's all history. Unless someone renames it, it's Folsom Lake Crossing. I'm still hoping the city pays tribute to Cash somehow. Morin promised something "substantial" would be done in Cash's memory but I'll believe it when I see it.

What is actually even funnier about the use of "crossing" is that I was the Council member to suggest the use of that term relative to Lake Natoma Crossing. I suggested it based upon the dictionary definition of Bridge versus Crossing. Bridge implies that the structure is intended to span a barrier or obstacle of some sort, and I did not think of Lake Natoma as a barrier or obstacle. At the time, crossing was criticized as sounding like a term used in New England (which is funny since I am, in fact, from New England - so it works for me). That is why I made such a big deal out of the name - it would be one thing to name it Folsom Lake, it is another to call it a crossing of a thing it does not even CROSS. Essentially, John got it right. However, keep in mind that one does not have the right to use the name or likeness of Mr. Cash without permission. I made contact with the family over the right to name the bridge after him, which they welcomed. They also watched the Council meeting on line - given the nature of the discussion and how the council members dismissed his contribution to putting Folsom on the map - I will not be in any rush to contact them again, for what they would likely see as a tourist/money grabbing thing.
What a shame that Roseanne Cash was not there to sing the national anthem...........

Yea.. but Kerri... as you were slurping your adult beverage at Mesquites after the opening... you did say how "insightful, interesting and of course inspriring" the comments from Congressman Lungren who was there speaking...
I missed that part... and my date wanted to know who Dan Lungren was...

You missed that part because you chose to arrive after the speeches, otherwise you both would have heard the Mayor's introduction of the Congressman, and she would have known exactly who he is. You used to thrive on those sorts of things. You are either getting older and wiser, or just bored. Our lunch was delicious, how was yours?

Kerri... our lunch was awesome.. because after all that walking we were thirsty and hungry... I had never eaten there before... great chips...
and of course I knew who Dan Lungren is she didn't know... and probably didn't care...
I still thrive on politics...but mostly now I'm a lurker... I ran into Al Lehman over at SavMart with his wife.. and well.. while we still get a little fire in us about some stuff here in town.. neither one of us wants to get involved again...maybe just get together for a blues jam...and that's it...

Wait, Johnny Cash did a concert at the prison? Wait, what prison?

I still can't believe the other council members settled on this name. Yes, it's stupid and trivial and just a bridge. Still, it makes our town looks dumb. Surprised they didn't try and call it the Miklos Tunnel.
