As for the seasonal flu shot I get it every year since I was in my mid thirties....     Had the flu back then once so bad, throwing up so violently that I put my heart rhythm out of whack...   Your call on that one...   If you don't get the flu much then maybe you don't need it....?   Once you hit around age 60 or so I would recommend it.  You start losing your immunological edge starting about then....

Yep, interesting....   I think they do this to avoid the 16+ inning and beyond games....   The ones that go to 2 or 3 in the morning....      Sort of like the shootout in professional soccer at the end if there's a tie....   I don't really like it but I do see the point.   Some nights I have to shut off the Giants game in the 7th or 8th inning if it is a slow one....    I get up at 0500....   I just check it in the morning to see who won.

Florida Dad Finally Gets Life-Saving COVID Treatment After Family Reached Out to 169 Hospitals

A 52-year-old Florida father of six is now recovering after his wife and family reached out to 169 hospitals before finding life-saving care for his serious case of COVID.

Robby Walker's wife Susan told CNN in early August that he was in "dire need" of ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) treatment but "all the beds [in nearby hospitals] are taken up by COVID victims also getting" treated.  She explained that COVID infections "spread like wildfire" among her unvaccinated extended family after a Fourth of July gathering.

By July 25, Robby, who had been hospitalized, consented to being intubated on a ventilator. "He cried and just told me how regretful he was of not getting the shot, and he begged me to go get vaccinated," Susan recalled, sharing that she did get vaccinated afterward.  Susan said that when doctors informed her it was unlikely Robby would survive, she "didn't accept it" and went on a mission to find a hospital that had room for ECMO treatment. In August, she told CNN, "We have searched every hospital from the south of Florida to the north part of Florida," and soon, she and family members had reached out to 169 hospitals to no avail.  But when Susan shared her plea for the life-saving treatment for her dying husband on CNN, a Connecticut doctor, Dr. Robert Gallagher, saw the broadcast on Facebook and wanted to help.  "I just clicked on it and watched it and ... it was pretty compelling," Gallagher told the outlet.  While still intubated, Robby was flown on a medical flight from Florida to Connecticut. Susan said of the transport, "It was kind of my Hail Mary because if I would have not taken the chance, they just would have had no choice but to leave him there and have his organs fail one by one."

After 22 days, Robby was removed from ECMO treatment on Sept. 2, CNN reports. He lost nearly 50 lbs. during his hospitalization and has begun physical therapy.

Robby told CNN Thursday that he "couldn't be more proud of" his wife, calling her "my hero" for saving his health. Now, Robby has a strict policy about unvaccinated visitors: "We've talked about putting a sign on the front door: 'If you're not vaccinated, you can't come in. We'll talk on the yard.' "

The Typical COVID Death Rate for the Fully Vaccinated? ‘Effectively Zero’

 

Back in the spring, we here at NRO ran a piece by Andrew Michta titled, “The Zero-Risk Western Society.” We could re-run this piece every week — in fact, maybe we should; note to self — and it would still be pertinent. Taking the broad view of our COVID-19 response, Andrew noted “we seem to have become a people no longer capable of accepting any level of risk, while we demand an absolute certainty that those we elect to office provide safety, even at great cost.”  

Risk is at the heart of everything that’s been wrong with our pandemic response to date — managing it, calculating it, communicating it.

Today, policy-makers have to reckon with those tradeoffs once more as the Delta variant contributes to a surge in infections, and the media’s corona-coverage amplifies incidents of “breakthrough” cases. The trends are alarming and frustrating. But so would be a heavy-handed government revival of lockdowns (the Biden administration has vowed not to take this step, while leaving wiggle room), travel restrictions (Chicago is flirting with them), and other measures thought to be behind us. Thankfully, data from the Kaiser Family Foundation help put this renewed COVID-19 panic in perspective.

A few takeaways: Among those states reporting data on “breakthrough” cases for the fully vaccinated, the case rate is well below 1 percent. The hospitalization rate ranges from “effectively zero” to .06 percent. And there’s this: “The rates of death among fully vaccinated people with COVID-19 were even lower, effectively zero (0.00%) in all but two reporting states, Arkansas and Michigan[,] where they were 0.01%.”

That number again, “Effectively zero.”

Unvaccinated People Are 11 Times More Likely To Die Of COVID-19, New Research Finds

June 28, 2021 – If you, a friend or a loved one remain unvaccinated against COVID-19 at this point – for whatever reason – you are at higher risk for dying if you do become infected.

That's the conclusion of a new report The Associated Press released looking at COVID-19 deaths during May 2021.

Of more than 18,000 people who died from COVID-19, for example, only about 150 were fully vaccinated. That's less than 1%.  "Recently I was working in the emergency room [and] I saw a 21-year-old African- American who came in with shortness of breath," says Vino K. Palli, MD, a doctor specializing in emergency medicine, internal medicine and urgent care.  The patient deteriorated rapidly and required ventilation. She was transferred to a specialized hospital for in case she needed what’s known as ECMO treatment, where blood is pumped outside your body to remove carbon dioxide.

"This patient was unvaccinated along with her entire family. This would have been easily preventable," says Palli, who is also founder and CEO of MiDoctor Urgent Care in New York City.

"Vaccine misinformation compounded with vaccine inertia and vaccine access has contributed to this," he says. “Even though we have a surplus amount of vaccines at this time we are only seeing 50 to 55% off completely vaccinated patients.”

The AP report authors also acknowledge that some people who are fully vaccinated can get a “breakthrough infection” of COVID-19. These occurred in fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in May, or about 0.1%......
