in light of some of the new users on the boards, I thought I could gently remind everyone of what's considered appropriate on the MyFolsom.com Forums.
1) Please treat one another with respect. Name calling ("You're an idiot") is not something we will tolerate - we'll usually edit it.
2) In this particular issue, don't say anything you wouldn't say directly to a family member or friend of Andre- after all, it's quite possible you are, or you will be. The traffic on this forum is at an all-time high.
3) It's human nature to speculate, but please be respectful. Stupid or outlandish comments will be deleted or edited.
I understand a lot of people don't like being "moderated", but this is a very sensitive issue. If this is something you are not OK with, I suggest you go elsewhere.
Thanks everyone -

I'm not too old of an "old fart" - I'm in my mid-thirties, but I remember the guys in my small town playing a similar "choking game" using the crook of their arm around each other's necks to make each other "pass out". I never did it because I was too scared (thank God), but saw quite a few friends do it. This is not a new game, it is not a fad, it has been around A LONG TIME. It had nothing to do with auto-erotica or whatever you call it.
Unfortunately no matter how much information is out there about the dangers of certain types of activities, people just don't think it will happen to them. Teens especially have that sense of immortality. I don't think that will ever change. You just give your kids as much information, guidance and love as you can, then you hope and pray that they make the right choices.
I am totally saddened by this young man's death - I feel his parents pain. It sounds like it was a senseless accident. My heart goes out to them and I hope they come to peace with this in time.

In the TV interview it seemed to me like the parents were coming to a point where they were going to put themselves in a position to help other families avoid their tragedy. If it turns out that this was a terrible accident, then the rest of us parents can take it as a serious threat to our children and we will know to counsel them accordingly. Like Mrs. Anderson said, you talk to your kids about a lot of hazards, such as drugs, but this is one thing you don't necessarily think to discuss with them. I remember when my older children were in junior high there was a local teen who died from huffing a paint can. It was a new thing for him, but it only takes once. How many of us would have thought to mention the dangers of that to our kids before that tragic death? Then, there was the rash of meningitis deaths at FHS that reminded us to talk to our kids about the dangers of the seemingly benign sharing of drinks, chapstick, etc.
You can bet that I have talked to my middle school child about this "game." I had not before, and she fortunately had no idea what it was until now. Andre's tragic death may help some others to avoid a similar fate.

Well we have one more already and maybe more if needed- I and many others would certainly find it offensive to have related topics deleted as you suggest..
