Every time I want to make a left from Black Diamond onto Iron Point on my Motorcycle I have to wait until I THINK it is clear, close my eyes, floor it, and pray no one hits me! (I do not really close my eyes!) but it is hard to turn left on that street unless you are at a light! It is a big blind corner.
I think they should make everything RIGHT TURN ONLY except at a light. (Ingersoll has a light!)
I quit trying to come out of Black Diamond and just take Turn Pike to Blue Ravine to Prairie City instead. It's a nasty corner.
One thing I admit to, even if it's not "safe" is when someone's tailgating me, I push the brakes to show them the lights. I hate tailgating! Just go around me, idiot!

I agree If there is room, NEVER TAILGATE GO AROUND... but then again the law is also do not pass on the right... so IF you are in the LEFT lane, you should get over. *shrug*

I understand that it's legal to pass on the right in California, albeit potentially unsafe.

Regardless of the posted speed limit, your speed should depend on:
The number and speed of other vehicles on the road.
Whether the road surface is smooth, rough, graveled, wet, dry, wide, or narrow.
Bicyclists or pedestrians walking on the road’s edge.
Whether it is raining, foggy, snowing, windy, or dusty.
One of the things considered in the boys case was "what is the community standard for driving on this street".
When you go out to Iron Point and see how fast the average car is driving on a Saturday afternoon how did the boys driving compare to the normal driver.
The question then becomes not were they speeding compared to the posted speed limit sign - but were they driving the speed of the normal person given the conditions of the road, time of day, and the number of other cars on the road.
It was determined that the average driver is going over 20 mph over the speed limit under the same conditions. If the community standard was to drive 45 mph on this road they would be facing a tougher sentence.

I remember a guy pleading before the judge that he was going with the flow of traffic, so he didn't know why he was singled out.
The judge asked, "Does the speed limit sign say '65mph', or does it say, 'with the flow of traffic?'
Another guy got up there and argued that he was following the law because the speed limit was X, and he was going less than that.
The judge told him that one must go no faster than is posted, or is safe, but never more than the posted limit. He explained that you can be cited for speeding, even if you are going below the speed limit, if the citing officer deems the conditions unsafe for the posted limit. You may not go faster than the posted limit under any circumstances, even if you think it is safe to do so.

As to your question about why people speed here, one often hears folks say that it's all of the aggressive Bay Area people.
Actually, I think it's the wide open streets, the over scheduled adults, some long timers who've always done it that way, and the inexperienced youngsters.

Nah, the teen punks will still drive like maniacs. That's fine...they'll end up in the CYA some day too with those other "nice young men".

I believe the 80% mark for Iron Point is 61mph. Informally, of course, of they'd have to change the limit.

Noooooooo! Then everyone would get where they were going 10 seconds later! (Seriously)

My whole point is that it really is never okay with law enforcement to go over the speed limit. When I fought the Galt ticket, the judge said, "so you admit you were going 60?" I said, "yes, but the car behind me was tailing me and I was scared." The judge then stated, "So, you have admitted you were going 60 in a 55 zone." Case closed.

Yeah well we already got that day covered several times over.
Turn the bulls loose downtown (Jul)
Marathon day (Oct)
Tri-athalon day (Aug)
Back to School Day (Aug)
Let the kids out of School Day (Nov, Dec,April)
Prom Night (?) it should be required to let the community know what day this is
I'm sure there are more--but my memory is suffering due to lack of coffee intake this morning.
