I wouldn't mind a Johnny Cash bridge at all. I think it would be cool. But the current name is so ridiculous that just about anything else would be fine with me.

Maybe one set of bumper stickers and lawn signs focused on the Johnny Cash angle, and one set focused on the fact that the bridge doesn't cross Folsom Lake. I think with those two options, a lot of people in the city would end up having one or the other.

I hope that Steve doesn't mind me putting his email to me out here.

There is a "perception" that folks want us to consider naming the bridge
after Johnny Cash.

Except for a handful of few, I have found no one in support of that
name. In fact, it is quite the opposite. The Folsom community does NOT
want to be known for a prison, and after a person of lesser character.
Though Joseph Folsom was not the most honest individual, he was still
FAR better than Mr. Cash.

Besides, Mr. Cash has done nothing for this city. He wrote a song about
a prison which is actually located in "Represa"

I think your suggestion has some merit. I am not married to the "Lake"
being in the name, and have been reviewing the list to see what might
change the council's mind.

Thanks for sharing your thought. As always, I appreciate it!

Well wasn't there more people that suggested something with Johnny Cash in it...?

there were several.. but I think there were many... I could be wrong...

You know what else amazed me...? is that Steve Miklos really put down Johnny Cash...as a person of "lessor" character...

I think Val Doss has some good points about Johnny Cash and how he turned his life around... He was married to the same woman I think for most of his life wasn't he...

And finally.. Johnny Cash while being an Icon in the music industry... was also a HUMAN BEING....

He put this town on the map... and it's just too stinking bad if we have a prison here... so what...? don't we use those dudes to clean up our streets...

Thanks for posting that, camay. I guess it's a good thing he's just okay with Joseph Folsom; otherwise, we might have had to change the name of the whole city. I didn't realize we should be so ashamed of having a prison near town and our Old West history.

Maybe we should just bulldoze Sutter Street and put up fake Roman ruins and Eiffel Tower pretend we're a European city.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought Mr. Miklos' response was a little strange.

yes, it seems Mr. Miklos isn't that familiar with Johnny Cash. Maybe he just watched the movie "Walk the Line" and thought that summed him up. He was actually a humanitarian, especially once he recovered from the early period in his musical career when he drank and used drugs. He completely turned his life around and had true compassion for people. He was also, as someone else said, a devout Christian.

I personally am not the least bit ashamed of the prison. I think its a fun part of our history. It's certainly our most famous asset.
Knowing the past helps deciphering the future.

old miklos is one clever politico..he knows the less he says the less exposed he is. that was a stupic letter and maybe thats really him....he and his puppet King like to minimize the folks that don't agree....during the south of 50 days those opposed to massive develpment were called were according to miklos " a small group of malcontents" King in the paper called the Cash folks
a minority

his letter ought to go in the telegraph and the other paper to see if folks agree with him

heck if he is right in addition to sutter street and the old folsom hotel, get rid of the power house
and the historical museum.

we might even go for the name "granite bay south" to get rid of the prison stigma

I've got a better idea, old soldier. Why don't we just name it Dulac South. Here's the cartoon quote for Bill Z (We've missed ya. Hope your trip was fun) We can call the bridge the Far Far Away Crossing.

"Welcome to Duloc, such a perfect town
Here we have some rules, let us lay them down
Don't make waves, stay in line
And we'll get along fine
Duloc is a perfect place

Keep your feet off the grass
Shine your shoes, wipe your...face
Duloc is, Duloc is
Duloc is a perfect place - with no prison"

I wish I would post some of the emails he has sent me in which he staunchly defends that the current bridge name is more popular than Cash Crossing. He went as far as to say he's been "showered with compliments" or something to that effect as to the bridge name.

It just makes me scratch my head... who exactly does he hang out with?

UPDATE....

I have not heard squat from Starsky, Miklos or King to my letter...

So... maybe we will have to do something different...

Maybe if we got a crowd down there at city hall we'll get the message across...

Maybe if we got a Petition to be filed on and we voted on it...? who knows... I haven't checked into that...yet...

To get the council to change their vote, I believe you will need at least 2 of those who voted yes to ask for reconsideration.

The best way to pursue this would be to start a petition and try and gather about 5000 signatures or roughly about 15% of the registered voters in Folsom. This would probably encourage council members to reconsider their vote.

Another option would be to get a petition and request a vote of the people through a charter amendant naming the bridge after Cash, but that would take more signatures and a lot of work.

Issues like this, generally transform into some other debate during the campaign. Naming the bridge after Cash isn't a right or wrong thing to do, so here will be a significant amount of people who will just vote NO on things no matter what. Couple that fact with many people will see Kerri being behind this movement. To be blunt, she just doesn't have the widespread suppport like her colleagues have and she has done a fairly good job of antagonizing many different groups and other community leaders. On issues where there really isn't a right or wrong, they probably would oppose anything she gets behind, because that is what she has done to so many herself. There are reasons why she consistently gets less votes than her colleagues when she runs.

These are the reasons why I'm fairly confident that an election regarding naming the bridge Johnny Cash would NOT be successful. Of course I respect everyone's right to their own opinion.

Those of you who want to tar & feather me for speaking bluntly, get in line. That still won't change the facts that the best way to get the name changed will probably be to get a petition started and try to get 5000 signatures.

Good luck!
