quite the contrary - my son and I have lunch at Carl's about once a week - they are our favorite fast food burger place.

Here you go...
Hamburger tasting at Carl's Jr.
While I've always thought Carl's Jr. has had a superior burger to most other fast food places, I cannot say they compete very well with the gourmet burger market that they seem to be targeting with their six dollar burger series.
Today I tried their Prime Rib six dollar burger that came with a charbroiled black angus beef patty, thin sliced prime rib, creamy horshradish sauce, melted swiss cheese and grilled onions on a toasted ciabatta roll

after all the advertising hype with the commercials and such, I had high expectations, but in the end - it tasted like a salsbury steak with a bunch of salty sauce - it was ok.. but in a school cafeteria food kind of way... needless to say I didn't like it much
That doesn't mean I dont' like Carl's Jr - heck I worked there for a few months when I was in high school and my son and I go there a few times a month but we always get the bacon swiss crispy chicken sandwich which tastes great.

Carl's Jr Prime Rib Six Dollar Burger
Out of a notional 5-step scale of "Bad, Okay, Good, Very Good, Excellent"
Meat: Good (you can taste the difference with the angus beef but it was kind of like salbury steak)
Cooked: Okay (you don't get a choice, it comes out medium well
Bread: Good (it was a ciabatta roll that was soaked in juices and sauce from the burger)
Toppings: OK, it tasted ok with the mushrooms but the swiss and sauce was a bit too much
Fries: Okay, nothing major, they're just ok
Pickle: none included
Tea: n/a
Service: n/a - it was counter service
Ambience: Okay, not much to expect from a fast food place
To be honest, I rate Carl's Jr lower then Big Dip when it comes to burger favorites.
my personal order of favorites so far... (keep in mind) it's kind of wierd to place a gourmet burger place with classic burger places but here's my take...
folsom bistro
big dip
karens bakery
carl's jr

I, on the other hand, had a turkey panini today.

They don't serve the hamburger in wrappers when you dine in at Carl's Jr?

yep In-N-Out does indeed have very good burgers - but are they better then Folsom Bistro or Bidwell Street Bistro or Karens Bakery?
We shall see.....

Even though I think In-n-Out is the best of the fast food burgers around here (hurry up and git er built and open for business!), a burger there isn't the same as a gourmet burger at Folsom Bistro, Bidwell Street Bistro, Express Gourmet
Maybe the Best Burger should have two categories - fast food (Carls, In-n-Out, McDs, Jack in da Box etc) and gourmet (FB, BSB, RR etc). And while I havent attended a review fest, I hope to soon. Did I read FSB is next week?

Good review and pics as usual. Nothing to compel me to try fast food again (haven't been to a fast food place outside of few times of desperation for the past 10-15+ years). There's only so much you can dress up a Yugo.
I tried Folsom Bistro. Good stuff and consistent w/ your reviews. Looking forward to trying Karen's but I'm gonna need them to hold all the sauce they put on (no pesto, etc; just burger, cheese and tomato).
I keep wanting to try the burger at Tahoe Joe's but I can't get past having a Joe's Steak w/ Baked Potato for basically the same price. All other things being equal, I'm probably going for the steak (sirloin / rib eye) over ground beef (chuck) every time......
BTW, if you ignore a user, how do you keep their comments from showing up in replies as well?

my point exactly and you're right - maybe we should have two categories because its hard to compare a fast food burger with a gourmet burger
Yes, I'm thinking Bidwell Street Bistro should be our next place - Tuesday at noon.
