You're right. All of them got ready for work that day thinking, "yeah today is the day I get to kill a person."

Do you seriously just argue for the sake of arguing or what?

No of course not. But they shot him from 36 inches away? They could have billy clubbed but seemed to move to the last resort too quickly. I'm sure they felt they did the right thing.

This is not slamming the FPD. But the other comment WAS slamming the family, don't forget, they lost a loved one, and all they did was call for help. It's fine if you want to say the police all deserve some kind of metal for keeping our streets safe that Easter morning, but don't insinuate the family did anything wrong.

who said the family did anything wrong or that the police deserve a medal for that??

hey armchair quarterback, try actually being in front of a knife swinging at you before you make all these "I know everything about this type of situation" statements, oh and don't forget you already tried to taser him 3x's and that didn't work.

you watch far too much tv

I know, all those real videos you see where police club the hell out of somebody who attacks them are fake right?

And I'm suggesting some taser target practice too, 0 for 3 with that but 2 for 2 with the real thing?

Hey Mr. Don't Taz Me Bro - results from tests haven't come back why the tazers weren't effective.

I had the opportunity to talk with a couple of the police officers that day. I can tell you from first had knowledge, none of them were happy about what happened. Every officer that I saw was pretty somber, and the whole time very professional.

I too am concerned why the tasers didn't work. I bet you everyone of the officers in the house that morning are asking themselves what they could have done to affect a different outcome. We know that at least two different officers fired their weapons. To me that suggests that at least two officers felt their safety, and the safety of the others in the house, was in jeopardy.

Environmental factors have everything to do with how someone will react, or conduct themselves, when faced with that moment of sheer terror... Let's call it 'fight or flight.'

(Keep in mind also, the threat zone in going against an 'Edged Weapon' is 21' ft.)

Suppose it's a 9'ft. by 9' ft. room, with a bed, a couch, and as described - clothes and clutter all around, with 'pathways' formed in them (making the floor surface uneven around you.) The person who you want to begin dialogue with, is seated across the room on the couch - holding a knife - and is now just 9' ft. away. Just as your senses tabulate your surroundings, the person with the knife yells at you to leave, or they will 'cut your throat...' NOW... as the words reached your ears, the person is up on his feet - and is moving rapidly at you.. TOO QUICKLY.. with the knife moving... and he's target locked on YOU!!!

The officers were not in a parking lot, side street, breeze-way, or open livingroom. How much room do you think is needed, to expand a baton and set yourself to strike with it? Batons were not even an option in this scenario.... in my opinion.

As it were, and was reported, the subject was tazed 3 times... shot twice... and still after those measures, one of the officers STILL had to go hand-to-hand with the knife (hand), and got puched in the mouth while doing so. Not at all like T.V. There were no 'Winners' in this incident at all.......... only survivors.

Our prayers and concerns are with all who were involved....

How many of those videos you've seen often were filmed in a 9x9 cluttered room? None huh?
FYI, tasers don't always work on people flying high on drugs

Actually, that could just be shortened to "Tasers don't always work".

Clothing can be a hindrance to both probes making good contact. And if the wires and or probes are too close to each other or in contact, it's always possible they short out preventing proper operation. I know they are engineered to try and prevent that, but nothing is a perfect insulator, especially at high voltages.
I would rather be Backpacking

If this subject was shot at 3 feet away, this tells me he had advanced on them. Sorry Darth, been there done that. Basic training is that an officer rises in the escalation of force above what they face. Baton is NOT acceptable.

First rule of surviving a knife fight, is not to bring a knife to a gun fight.

We all dream of a world of sunshine and rainbows and peace. The problem is some people think this would be a great place to live, while others think it would be a great place to pillage.

I wonder why the police just didn't leave after they realized they could not help. The young man told them to leave, why did they have to push their way back into the bedroom that was cluttered and only 9x9...

You really can't see why they couldn't leave? I am sad for the family too, but I can see why leaving wasn't an option.

Leave so he could potentially harm or kill a family member??? That was not an option. The police don't walk away from people with weapons who are threatening others.

oh, I didn't know he was threatening anyone, I just thought he was in a room all by himself. I just wish they could have called in someone that was better trained to handle the situation, and maybe this was a lesson learned and next time there can be a better outcome.
