this may sound a bit big-brother-ish, but consdering that we live in the computer age with all sorts of GPS and what not...

how about requiring all drivers under a certain age and potential risk groups (cars more than xxx HP) to have a device that records telemetry data. that is, data like speed, g-force, etc. we already have this technology it's just not linked and sent anywhere. it could be made to disable the car in case the device is tampered with. we have similar things for DUI people (breathalizer in car, etc).

insurance companies could be informed of this data - or send it to parents, etc. consequences could be imposed and what not. i bet the fear of losing their car or not being able to pay for their car (higher insurance) would stop a large percentage of reckless people. Of course you'd always have that other percentage that it wouldn't affect either way.

what do you think?

I believe most newer cars (2000+) have a black box similar to jets which record speed, etc.

I know the boys through their activities. They are friends and do the same things. For the most part, I know the parents through the boys. With so many people involved I don't know everyone equally.

I guess an example would be:
Do you know everyone that goes to your church? Yes
Are you best friends with all of them? No

The question that I have been struggling with all night. And will not even pretend to have an answer for is:

If two cars are driving 60-80 miles per hour down the road.
And from this web site many people drive 65-75 on the same road.

At what point does it change from two cars independently speeding in the same direction to racing?

Is it based on the drivers age?
Is it based on the type of car?
Is it based on the fact that the drivers are friends?
Is it based on how many times they have changed lanes?

Does the law have specific criteria for racing?
Or is it like pornography, where you just know it when you see it?

Can any of you help me with this?

I think we all know racing when we see it.

Cars exceeding the speed limit, jockeying for position, driving recklessly for conditions (heavy traffic, heavy pedestrian traffic, etc.).

Usually when people are following friends somewhere in different vehicles they don't drive side by side. There is usually a leader and a follower.

to me racing has a start and a finish but I have seen kids sort of playing tag with each other weaving in and out of traffic. not a race but they were going fast and driving recklesly and when that happens and some one dies it shouldn't be looked at as just a speeding accidnet.

if you can believe tv cop shows, right now each boy will be talking to attorneys to see who can get the best deal and it would include admission of just what they were doing

I'm thinking it's only a matter of time before GPS is everywhere. Within 5 years, all cell phones will have them - it does seem scary but it can have significant advantages, especially in kidnapping cases or the elderly. 15 years - who knows?

That'd be me. ohmy.gif I'll admit, I did rush to judgment, but I didn't know the Stealth was that old. Had I known it was a beater... Have they really been around that long? Am I getting that old? I remember when that was supposed to be a cool car. Anyway, I retract my "spoiled, rich" comment.

I still hold my initial assertion about rich kids in Folsom. I know waaaay too many kids with really nice cars. It's crazy. BUT, that's a completely different thread!

Not only have we identified the age of the cars, ('91& '92) but the horse power for those cars is in the 160 -170 range. Realize that the new hybrid cars clearly exceed 200HP. Go figure.... Next we will be accusing the people speeding in new alternative fuel cars of racing. Expecially if they are teenagers.

I was in an accident a little over a year ago, once people were there responding to injuries and prior to the tow truck, I removed the things that were valuable to me I.e. my briefcase and laptop. Dang, what does that make me?

Heaven help me if the media would have seen that!

If I recall corrctly, she was pronounced dead at the hospital. So, why would you even ask your question?

so if you hit someone and they were seriously injured and died later at a hospital that would be ok by you? just because they didn't die at the scene?

thats some strange logic

I don't think many people would assume a kid driving a 15 year old Dodge is spoiled or rich. White... maybe.

For the life of me, I can't find any reference stating that the Stealth was 15 years old. Not in this entire post, nor in any of the articles. Where is that info coming from? Just curious.

Let me try asking this again......Can someone point me to the article or information that told us the Dodge Stealth in question was 15 years old? I can't find that info anywhere. Chief, do you know the parties involved, and is that how you know the age of the Stealth?

Stealth Production

Year (Jan-Dec) Sales
1990* 3,302 units
1991 18,352 units
1992 16,926 units
1993 14,556 units
1994 7,090 units
1995** 3,077 units
12-17 years old

Aha. I wasn't aware that Stealths were no longer in production, after '95. Thank you for the clarification!

Also, I have to admit, after Googling the Stealth, and seeing pictures, I realized that I was thinking of the Viper all this time. D'oh!!!!!!! My Bad.

Thanks Chris V. for setting me straight.

So, technically, the stealth is no longer in production. What are yall thinkin?????

Bumpers on the BMW were black, later years were painted the same body color.

I really did not think that that many people in Folsom were so thick headed, If people are attending to someone with injuries and there is nothing left to do except give witness statments, gather personal belongings, why is it so bad to secure personal effects? My god, there 17, I forgot that you all were so perfect that you never used other than perfect judgement.

Oh, all you had to do at that age was to feed your horse.
Sorry

Nice attitude. Why don't you get off your defensive high horse and quit judging people you're pissed off at for judging others.

First off, perhaps they should have been asking someone, anyone, to call their parents? Or more importantly, maybe they didn't actually need to be "doing" anything but hope like hell the person they hit was going to be OK. I don't care whether they were 17 or 71, whether they were speeding or street racing or not. I do care that they were trying to save their speakers when the lady they hit was dying. I would hope that these people would be, at the very least, compassionate and perhaps reflective instead of worrying about their personal effects. I know I would have been a wreck.
