Wow, they must know how to party non-stop by now. 12 days of Hannukah, then Christmas, then birthdays, then New Year's eve, soon to be followed by the Rose Bowl and the Super Bowl!
Happy Birthday Catabird and dwhandy!
Thanks, Mommy2Syndi and Tessieca!
And, YES, I DO know how to party!

So, now I just try to take things easy (and lay off the booze!). I have found it's a lot more fun spending the holidays with family & playing games like Texas Hold'em or Mexican Train Dominoes. Speaking of which, my sister and her two grown boys are on their way as I write to treat me to another opportunity to beat them at Mexican Train! (I won the game we all played Christmas Day!) That's what I call a birthday present!
LESSON #1:
Once, after picking up a cold during Christmas of 1989, I stupidly insisted upon going to Reno to ring in the New Year and

My sore throat swelled up, and my skin got all blotchy red all over (even on my face and hands!)--of course, I was at WORK at the time! All my colleagues started looking at me like I had an extra arm growing out of my head; no one would come near me!
I ended up having to take two weeks off work, so I could recuperate while on anti-viral meds. The docs even considered taking my tonsils out! Ack!
CONCLUSION:
Winning at cards or dominoes--or whatever--FAR exceeds partying anyday. The rewards are so much easier to live with.

Like any idiot, I under-dressed for the entire affair (in 16-20 degree temps!), and upon my return, promptly upgraded my cold to SCARLET FEVER.
Happy Birthday!
You must have had a Strep infection. Strep infections that are untreated progress to Scarlet Fever, and Scarlet Fever untreated progresses to Rheumatic Fever.
My daughter had Scarlet Fever when she was little -- although I initially thought it was the Chicken Pox. I thought the pediatrician was nuts when she said my daughter must have had Strep; she hadn't had a sore throat and I assumed Strep was always associated with a sore throat. Live and learn!

Strep IS a complication of sore throat. Growing up, I was prone to Strep. It always started as a sore throat--which is also indicative of a cold. Many colds begin with mild sore throats due to excessive post nasal drip (the excess phlegm is really the body's immune system fighting the cold virus).
I find that, if I cannot--or will not--get enough rest to combat a cold, I end up with complications like Strep, or a bronchial infection. This was quite common during my years in the Air Force--the military does not provide sick leave!
Now, though, I can take better care of myself! I rarely get sick, but if I do, I am able to devote the time to bed-rest and excessive fluid & chicken soup intake to help my body fight the infection. Plus, I always have a LOT of reading to do! :
