That's informing, not apologizing. Perhaps Kerri used the wrong term here, implying that they (and we) were more committed than it really was.

and you guys don't know that Kerri personally contacted the family.... until she says she did that all on her own I call BS on this... you and Robert are putting words in her mouth - keep in mind, she posted that note at 1:30 in the morning after a long day...
and honestly, don't you think it would be better for a city council member to contact the Cash family then an administrative assistant?

Dave, I didn't say the majority wouldn't vote for it. I said:::
It does not mean that the majority of the voting people in Folsom would have voted for it.

like I said, it was 1:30am when she posted that after a long day so gotta give her some slack on the verbiage... informing that the name was not selected is a "hey sorry it didn't work out" (aka an apology) - why is that such a big deal to you and Robert? and where the heck did you get that she implied to the family that Folsom was committed to this name?

That's what I was thinking. It's more like saying, "There were residents in support, but in the end the vote went another way. Sorry about that."

I know... I was saying how would you know that the majority of voting people would not have voted for it? you could be right you could be wrong.. thats all.
actually that would have been interesting to let the people vote for the name, but then heck there'd probably be problems getting down to the final few names to vote on...
ah well whats done is done, we have a stupid name for a bridge and I guess that'll be the legacy

Yes, Folsom Lake BRIDGE would indeed make a lot more sense - at least its the bridge near Folsom lake....not a crossing d'oh (it just sounds so stupid)
Other city council members are on here? I would have never known.....
I think that Folsom Lake Bridge is just as dumb sounding as Folsom Lake crossing.
This bridge is not crossing or bridging over the Folsom Lake. It will however block the view of people seeing the dam-once the construction is complete.
I went onto the folsom History museum web site: http://www.folsomhis...m.org/index.htm
and found this little quote about Folsom:
"..the Folsom area was once part of a large Mexican land grant owned by William Leidesdorff."
How many of you knew that? Now how cool would it have been to name it the W. Leidesdorff bridge?
Lots of other info on Folsom, there.
Anyone else wanna uncover an interesting piece of historical info about Folsom and come up with a name to commemorate our history?
I think this bridge naming thing needs to be re-adressed.

He already has a street in Folsom and I think part of Highway 50 named after him.

Yes, Folsom Lake was one of the finalists. The only reason Starsky and Miklos voted for it was because it had the name "Folsom" in it. "Folsom Dam" was nixed because the Bureau of Reclamation started this whole mess and they didn't want to give them any credit. Miklos went as far as to say he'd rather name it after John Doolittle. He wanted "City of Folsom Bridge". I'm not joking.
Makes sense... every time I hear "Folsom Dam" mentioned, the first thing that comes to mind is the Bureau of Reclamation.

I've had the same exact idea in my head... this is the most descriptive and appropriate name.
Nothing against most of the other options, they have their pros and cons, but "F.L. Crossing" just sounds off.

I was having a conversation with our Federal Lobbyist (the gentleman who provided the City with assistance in keeping the federal funding for the bridge in place and who helped get the Bureau of Reclamation and the Corps of Engineers on the same page). This was in April. I told him that the City was having a contest to name the bridge. I told him that I thought naming it after Johnny Cash would be a good idea for all the reasons I have already stated. I went on to say that "If I were Roseanne Cash (who is also a Country Singer), and someone was naming a bridge after my Dad I would want to be there to sing the national anthem." Bob's reponse was that he tought she would and would probably have her brother there with her. I was surprised by this response and Bob's knowledge of the family. So I then said "Do you actually know Roseanne Cash?" Bob then replied that he had attended a country song writing school that Ms. Cash operates in New York and that they had become friends. Because it looked like Johnny Cash was in the running, I wrote a letter, explaining that it would likely be considered by the Council and that having the family's approval would be important. The response back from Roseanne Cash was that the family supported it, and had obtained approval from Mr. Cash's manager and estate attorneys. The next day, another email was forwarded from Cindy Cash, another of the Cash siblings. They offered to attend the opening. No firm commitment was made to the family in advance - no, I did not get "permission" from the Council or from City Staff to send the letter, nor did I call the City Manager and request that someone from City Staff write the letter - though I did copy the City Manager when the letter was sent and he sent it on to the City Attorney. I did that on my own because A) I had inadvertantly found a way to reach the family and B) I knew that, if we decided to name the bridge after Johnny Cash - we would need the family's approval and why wait until after the fact to do that, as they might not have agreed and we would be back to square one.
I contacted the family because I thought is was simple common courtesy and because of the expectation that we would need legal permission, if Johnny Cash was selected.
So the next letter will say, sorry it didn't work out, though there seemed to be public support, my colleagues selected another name.
