My understanding is the water dept employee was not charged with any felonies even though that was what he was arrested for.And that he was ultimatly charged weth petty theft.

Common. DA makes the call.

We all dream of a world of sunshine and rainbows and peace. The problem is some people think this would be a great place to live, while others think it would be a great place to pillage.

You have to have zero-tolerance for those who take an oath to uphold/not break our laws.

He knew what he was doing was wrong. I assume the guy isn't stupid.

There seems to be an effort here to bend over backwards to justify his conduct.

Very poor judgement on his part. Did he ask Malabar management if he could take the "worthless" grease? Seems to me that would have been the proper action.

If he isn't demoted, then the culture of problems within the department will continue.

You gotta send a strong, clear, powerful message to other officers who may, at some time, be tempted to take the law into their own hands.

(PS: No thanks on the beer, jafount. No offense, but you scare me.) smile.gif
I have opinions, you have opinions. We'll just call it even...is that OK ??

He will be fired if the city uses the same type of discipline for him as they did far water dept employee(He wasn't just demoted).Or maybe they will have a double standard and just let it slide since it was a cop?

Well...if they set a standard, they have to live by that. Seems a shame to hammer a 22 year career over something so trivial. Then again...seems a shame to risk a 22 year career over something so trivial, which is why I cannot help but think he must have had some kind of permission from someone somewhere along the way.

But entering a parking lot with intent to steal isn't?

maybe so if the parking lot was surrounded by fence with a locked gate that had to be busted to get into.

I agree, but they hammered the water dept employee for a $40 item.Seems like they have a zero tolerance policy already if they stick with past practices.

Even then. Has to be a building, doesn't have to be locked.

From the video it looks like the grease was behind a metal enclosure.

Just for the record it was Malabar not Manderes but I did ask about this and Brent at Manderes said he gives his grease away and that the SRC recycling company just comes and takes it - they don't pay him, he doesn't pay them.

so with that being the case - would you be stealing if you took the grease that was being given away - but "claimed" by the SRC recycling company?

(just asking to see what the response is, don't make it any more then that)

and hey since Malabar hasn't come forward and said he had permission, and the SRC is claiming a contract for the grease, then what the officer did was not right and I agree he should be punished, but I believe that the officer should get the same punishment as a civilian - not doubled, that doesn't make sense...

lets keep things in perspective, you folks let your local politicians steal tens of thousands of dollars of your tax dollars weekly/yearly but yet you don't do anything or care about it as much as you do wanting to see a 22 year police offer go down over such a minor thing (disclaimer to chip, that is MY opinion)
Yes, he should be punished but no he shouldn't be hung for this...

and hey, you scare us too chip, but I'd still have beers with ya... tongue.gif

I agree , but if the city has a zero tolerance for its employees then don't treat him any different than they treated the water employee.Use same standards for police officers as they do with other employees,no special treatment.

I doubt it.

You just don't like my opinions. I don't 'conform' to the culture of Liberalism on this board, and it irks some of you people.

But no biggee. I don't go with the thundering herd.

I am a free thinker, not bound by the Kool-aid. biggrin.gif

laugh.gif That was down right hilarious! - I hate to break it to you but listening to Rush IS drinking kool-aid by the gallons.... but hey, he's at the head of the herd and maybe you're just be too far in the back of the pack to realize how much you're following...

Is that your idea of free thinking and non-conformity? tongue.gif
