Off topic but why is it that I see so many people mix up the words "loser" and "looser?"

Yahoo, good one, do you need flyers from me?

"loser" and "looser?"

English, it's the most difficult language to learn, let alone practice, IMHO.

I am very familiar with Schoharie School District and I would like to extend some goodwill from Schoharie to Sutter. I know that both schools share a sincere interest in the future of their children and want their school to benefit from the technology offered in the Samsung prize award. I know this has been addressed before but, please remember there will be a total of five (5) schools who will all receive essentially the same prize award. One selected by this agonizing voting process and the other four selected by the judges based on the guidelines listed in the Samsung rules. I think it is very important to keep that in perspective, to perhaps ease some of the emotionality that has been escalating throughout the course of this endless month of voting.

The reason I am posting this is to extend the "olive branch" from east to west. All of the schools who have made it to the final stage of this grant should be very proud of their students. I am very familiar with both a large suburban school district, where I live and my children attend school, and Schoharie’s rural community, so I hold no cultural biases. We as parents all advocate vehemently for our children, I am pretty sure that is our responsibility.

I do want to explain what is driving this very strong sense of community from the Schoharie point of view. When I first came to Schoharie I was struck by two things, the breathtaking beauty of the valley and the kindness of the people. I can honestly say that I have never met a group of children like those who attend Schoharie CSD. These kids have no sense of entitlement. The vast majority kids don’t have Uggs, smartphones or Vera Bradley backpacks. They don’t wear Abercrombie or Hollister and they don’t seem to feel deprived. Many children work the land and appreciate the small things in life; to me it seems we would all be better off if more kids grew up in an agricultural community.

All that they had was taken from them in August. The flood waters flowed over the top of the Gilboa dam and the sirens sounded. We had always been advised if the sirens went off we would know the situation was life threatening, and it was. But the community pulled together and neighbor helping neighbor they all miraculously survived. What didn’t survive were most of the homes, all of the utilities and community buildings. Many kids lost everything they owned. Almost every high school student spent weeks shoveling rancid muck out of the homes and businesses that suffered damage, but could be restored. The water in most homes was over nine feet deep. Entire houses collapsed into the creek, and trailers floated away and broke into unrecognizable debris. The kids lost their pets and their farm animals. But the most tragic loss was the beauty of the valley and the precious fertility of the soil, the pride of this valley.

Our kids produced their video, with amazing independence, with the hope of solving an authentic problem in their environment. Most of the students had never used a video camera before. The prize package Samsung sent us was received with great enthusiasm by the kids and the teacher who helped them with the video, who had lost her home too. The kids learned so much about the flood (they submitted three videos) and did math calculations and scientific analysis that actually helped with the relief effort. It helped their community to understand that they can perhaps recover from the ravages of Irene.

No one in Schoharie wants a vote of pity; this is a community of strong and deservingly proud people. We just want our kids to be recognized for the monumental job they accomplished in helping our community solve an environmental problem, yes, for tomorrow. If we win we will be honored, if we don’t we will congratulate the worthy winners. Best Wishes to Sutter.

That would have been a great idea. I just got home from the game about thirty minutes ago. :(

I'll hand out some at the Kings game tonight!

It's no different than the people who "Solve for Tomorrow, Sharing the Wonder of Science, Yechnology and Math."

Samsung needs proofreaders.

Well, I just placed my last vote for Sutter, even with the wideeeeee spread, there still is a possibility, c'mon Folsom.

Not to gripe or appear as a sore loser <wink>, there's lots to be said about the Samsung site aside from it's spelling errors, like the lack of a "Register" button, I ran into so many that couldn't even get beyond that part, believe it or not.

Dude- you still have one more vote today .

But looks like it will not matter as NY is over 10,000 up on Sutter

Looks like we should congradulate Schoharie High School in NY for the Peoples Choice award and hope that Sutter gets one of the other 4 merit awards...

... and if not - Sutter has won at least the $70K in STUFF-- Great Job Sutter...

Another great  day in the adventure of exploration and sight.

Hey, every single vote counts, don't give up just yet my friend.
My last vote was placed a little after 9pm last night, that's after midnight EST and applies to Monday.

While I wish we would have won, I hope that Schoharie goes over 100K votes.
