Everyone is so ready to be outraged about perceived violations to their "rights"...

I don't think this nurse, who was actively treating Ebola patients, is going to get much sympathy for her view that she shouldn't be subject to added scrutiny and quarantine when she arrives back on U.S. soil. Really?? Everyone else should just take their chances so you won't have to be inconvenienced?

She feels her human rights were violated by quarantining her when she arrived back in NJ from treating Ebola patients in Africa. She doesn't seem to have any concern for members of the public who might not want to sit next to her on a bus or use the same public restroom...

Granted, it is hard to catch Ebola from casual contact, but don't we as a society have the right to minimize the risk? Also, it is more efficient to quarantine them at the outset, so we don't have endless tracing of contacts every time a health care worker gets sick.

As a steadfast supporter of personal rights, you might think I would support this nurse. I do not. Your rights, while inalienable, are not absolute.  You cannot use free speech to incite a riot. You cannot talk of bombs in an airport. You cannot carry a concealed weapon without jumping through hoops.

If you are a potential vector for a highly contagious, highly lethal disease, then you suck it up. How incredibly selfish to want to take the chance of infection of others so you aren't inconvenienced. We can already hold people against their will if they are suspected of harming themselves or others. Why is this any different? Certainly, the risk of mass infection outweighs convenience.

And how bout that NJ government. Pass the law, and then cave within days because of an outspoken whiner. She knew the risk when she went to Africa. While I applaud her wanting to help, actions have consequences. For pete's sake, she had a fever when she arrived. But hey, let's let her go about her business so we won't offend her sensibilities.

DOH! Idiots are in charge....

Despite the misleading reporting, I don't think Gov. Christie has fully "caved." I think he is evolving toward a policy where high-risk individuals could do their 21-day quarantine at home, rather than in a hospital. That sounds 100% appropriate to me.

I think it got complicated in the nurse's case because she lives in Maine. So, they didn't want to just send her on her way... but it's awkward for her to be stuck in NJ.

The details may still be a bit rough, but I think Gov. Christie's instinct of a mandatory rather than voluntary quarantine will prove right.

Now, a 5 year old boy who just came from W. Africa is being tested:

especially since this nurse wants to return to her home in Maine and the local mayor or some other local official said they were worried about her coming because, no doubt, they don't have what's necessary to treat and contain the illness if she develops symptoms.  you treat ebola victims, you stay out of the public for three weeks, period.

How exactly does an idiot "operate" a thermometer to get a false high reading?

So how would that create a false HIGH reading? You are aware that the TSA uses handheld, infrared thermometers right? Point at skin, read the result. Not much room for error...

CNN and Fox News have both said that her temperature was read and was normal.  She was still being held and then several hours later her temperature was taken again.  Because of her anger on being held she was flushed.  The second thermal scan showed an elevated temperature.  Boom - she was now going to be held against her will.
