The only spanking law we need is one that makes it mandatory discipline.

Or at least reserves the rights of other patrons in an establishment to spank your children if you refuse to discipline or remove them yourself.

How about something like the scarlet letter that parents would have to wear if it's been proven that they don't remove themselves and their kids when needed?

I went to the above listed URL and tried to send the assemblywoman a message, but since my address was outside of her district the website wwould not accept my message and told me to go find the representative from my district.

Nice way to avoid comment.

Use the address 27 church street Mountain View , CA 94041 in your contact info-

This is crazy to legislate spanking -- my best years were a result of my spankings and the fear of it --- I never did it to my kids due to my ex but sure wish I had- it is very effective reminder ...

Nothing brought out the fear in me except for the dreaded anticipation of my dad coming home and bringing out the whooping belt. I didn't even need to get belted by it, just the mere sight of it made my demeanor change 180 degrees.

I am one to tell you, taking away tv, phones, video games, etc just doesn't work. Why? When we were kids, a lot of us DIDN'T have those anyways, so why wouldn't a kid of today adapt just as well? But the whippin' part......WE all had that.

Actually, the fact that children of today not only have these items, but rely upon them as they rely upon the air they breathe makes withholding of these items rather effective. But it has to be decided upon a case by case basis; each parent has to know what things each child holds dear; those are the items that should be removed to make the punishment effective.

That aside, this bill is ludicrous. While it's being promoted as a no spanking bill, some of the language refers to acts that are actually abuse -- which is already against the law. This is stupid, stupid, stupid.

When I see bills like these, I always check to see what else they have introduced for this session. Here's a sampling:

*AB-22 would repeal the exclusion of a child born into a family receiving aid (welfare) for the 10 months prior to the child’s birth, for purposes of determining the family’s maximum aid payment.
*AB-76 would require the corrections department to establish female rehabilitative community correctional centers (no more than 200 beds each, at least 15 such facilities) - prison term served at same location as residential parole
*AB-77 would require the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to appoint a working group to develop an action plan for reforming the parole system. (Any guesses where she wants this one to go?)

I will seriously consider leaving this state if this law passes.

I second that...and I don't even spank my kids!

Once again proving California is the land of fruits and nuts...gheez, don't our representatives have something better to show for their efforts?

Like focusing on the true "abusive parents" making one brutal assault against a child grounds for losing parental rights?

Like providing enough resources to social service agencies to better monitor children who are in at risk positions?

And I could go on and on..

Whew! I saw this thread and got worried. Then I realized it was about kids...

And when I have kids, as long as mental intimidation is still legal, my kids will be little angels... If not, I haven't seen anything suggesting stoning is on the books.

Well if you think this is stupid, the United Kingdom is worse. Over there the law allows 'light' spanking, but outlaws hitting that leaves a mark. Much more ridiculous, as who can define what is 'light'?
I've just arrived in Folsom as a childcare provider (au pair), and although I do not agree with spanking as a form of discipline, I believe it should be a parents right to choose.
