These reviews sound great. Thank you for all of the information.

One more question: Do they put cilantro in their salsa? (Please say, "no.")

I want to say no. It's actually somewhat sweet tasting, like it has a significant amount of oregano. Good spice, it's not for the weak, but not overly spicy. Just like the chile colorado.

Don't go there thinking you'll get bland Mexican food, but you also won't burn your tongue off.

If you guys ever head up the hill to Apple Hill country, Placerville also has a fabulous hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant. The Tijuana Tacqueria is located on Broadway near Airport Road. It's been there for years and started as literally a hole where people ate their tacos on their tailgates. Now its a full restaurant. Excellent food that is truely non-Americanized. Be wary of the Chili Colorado--IT IS HOT, HOT, HOT and not for the faint of heart! The prices are great too. I served a family of 8 which included two growing teen boys and a few beers for $100. PS--The guacamole is awesome too. rolleyes.gif

I'd have to say "NO" because I myself hate cilantro. People always say it's got a little, well a little is to much for me.

I'm so glad I tried Felipes last weekend before revisiting it this weekend. Today the service was horrible and it wasn't because it was busy. There was only one other table with customers when we first walked in and no one else while we were there. I'd be willing to go back, but I hate bad customer service. These are notes to self.........I don't want to beg for more water or have you forget my guacamole until after I'm done eating. Of course I'd have reminded this to the waiter if she was around. After you drop off a bill please don't make me come find you after waiting a very long time for your return. I'm always patient if your busy but when I'm the only customer.......how hard can it be? angry.gif

We (my husband and I) also went to Felipe's last night. I would give my rating a so-so, not bad, but not great. There were only five other tables occupied, but service was soooo slow. Since we did not have our kids with us, that was OK, but it would have been nice to have someone replenish our chips or drinks at some point. As for the food, I thought it was good, and huge portions, maybe too big of portions. Our waiter promised tortillas at one point, but the tortillas never arrived. All the waiters seemed to be under 18, I honestly did not see an adult staff over 21.

Overall, we will go back. Let them work out the kinks. As said before, I thought the food was good. If they can overcome the poor customer service aspect, hopefully they can thrive.

We were there last night, too, with some family that were visiting. It was a resoundingly OK meal.

Service was OK, one dish came out really late, but that's part of the opening jitters. Food wasn't as good as I thought the other day. My tamale was gluey and the pork was dry. So was the beef in the chimichanga.

So this is owned by the same family as the Felipe's on the border of Roseville/Citrus Heights, off the I-80 Riverside exit?

If so, that's awesome. I've been going there since we moved to Sacramento in 1982! It's one of those places that everyone and their whole families goes to.

We returned to Felipe's last evening (Saturday) arriving about 6:15 p.m. We followed a large group of 8. The usual hostess was not working so we had to wait a few minutes for a waiter to seat us. Water came right away as did warm chips and salsa. We were worried about the large group so when the waiter took our drink order we placed our order. The chipbasket was about 2/3 gone when dinner arrived steaming hot and ready to eat. We had a steak faita dinner and a #14 two cheese enchiladas dinner. The beans with cheese and the rice are hot and tasty. The enchiladas are abundant with cheese and the enchilada sauce in nearly as good as Lupita's across the river. Refills of chips, salsa, and sodas were timely. We paid when the bill arrived and were on our way. The booths are really comfortable and afford a greater level of privacy than most other Folsom eaterys. The decor is tastful and warm. The lights could be turned down just a little and it would be nice if the view to the kitchen were somehow blocked or buffered. A nice feature of Felipe's is that arriving patrons are semi-removed from the dining room. It is a nice change from many smaller places in Folsom where arriving guests shuflle around the front tables awaiting being seated. The staff is working to getting their service routines polished but they are trying hard and are providing service with a smile.

We tried Felipe's on Saturday and the food was really good. We were there about an hour before they closed so there weren't very many people in there. The service was fast and the waiters were really nice and attentive. I had the chicken fajitas and got a chile relleno on the side. The chicken fajitas were really good, lots of flavor! The chile relleno was ok. It was better than most mexican restaurants, (but not as good as my all-time favorite chile relleno from El Novillero). I will definitely go back there.

As my grandfather used to say: "En gustos se rompen generos" or "Genres are broken with different tastes".

That said, I think Felipe's is mediocre at best. I tried the Chile relleno and it was probably the worst I've had, seemed to have been made with a tempura type batter, really really nasty. The beans and rice were OK, but I didn't go there for the beans. My wife got a Tamale and it too was not great. tp.gif thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

My 2 cents.

Our family tried out Felipe's tonight for dinner and I also rate it an okay. Not bad, but not the best we've ever had. Service was alright- we were one of maybe 4-5 occupied tables in the place. We all liked the chips and salsa except the chips kinda had a funky "chemical" type of smell to them- they tasted good though! We all liked the rice and beans and my husband liked his enchiladas. I also had enchiladas and the sauce was just so-so......kinda strong for me. The iced tea was great (I say this cuz it was sun tea......some places use the gross powdered tea and if you like sun tea, that is important to know!!). We did not find the portions to be huge as someone previously mentioned and in fact, my husband was still hungry so we had to get more chips. All in all, we are not opposed to going back at some point but still looking for a really good Mexican restaurant. Next to try.........Mesquite- opening on Monday!

I tried it tonight with my girls. Tamales and the rice are always my 'test'. The tamale was okay. A little dry and a little too much masa (sp?). They did put a sort of broth/gravy with lots of meat in it on top, which helped, but the tamale was still so-so. The rice was good, though a little dry. I also had a cheese enchilada which was good, but the sauce tasted canned. My kids however loved everything. My 8 yr old loved her nachos and my 4 yr old scarfed her bean/cheese burrito. We'll definately be back, but it wasn't the best Mexican food ever. The service was good and very quick. Overall rating of a "B".

It's interesting to see the subjectivity in tastes over restaurants.. Overall I think it's a good thing, but illustrates the necessity to try things for one's own self..

We haven't been back since our first visit, but plan to do so to see if it has held the test of time. (short as it may be..)

I mainly came here to read restaurant reviews, but have since learned what I may like someone else may not be crazy about.. (I have known this for a while actualy, but have never really applied it to Folsom restaurants)

I am interested in the overall subjectivity of society and how we sometimes "go with the flow" versus taking the least travelled path.. But I digress smile.gif

I still feel the same about my initial impressions, but I am particularly interested in seeing if some of the polish has now come off as others have experienced..

I'll keep ya posted..
