I heard the other day that there are over 800 wildfires burning in California. Why aren't fireworks banned altogether this year? Everything is so dry.

It probably has more to do with liability, if someone using the parking lot to shoot off fireworks gets injured using those fireworks. We do live in a "sue-happy" society, after all. Someone would be sure to blame Costco for Junior's unfortunate accident with that Piccolo Pete that he pinched with a pair of pliers, and set off while still holding it.......

Also, probably because most people would not clean up the mess they made (burnt spots on the pavement, debris, etc.)

Good Points!

I agree with you, but all of the non profits who use the firework booths to raise money would be hurt. They have probably already purchased the fireworks and then wouldn't be able to recoup their money by selling them.

Because we haven't yet become a totally communist country and still enjoy some freedoms, like lighting off some fireworks with the kids/grandkids.

Frankly, I'm kinda glad to hear this. We've already had a lot of fires, we're in a dry season with fire risk high, and while I enjoy seeing fireworks, I think we don't need to take chances associated with fireworks bought at stands. In fact, one year, we actually had 1 fire in brush near our house.

I was watching the news this evening and while I can sympathize with little leagues that depend, in part, on sales of fireworks, I just don't see how that type of funding can compare with the possible devastation fires can cause -- substantial loss of property is best case, loss of life, including farm animals and pets is something wholly worse. I think the parents should pony up the additional costs or find alternative fund raising methods that don't pose the potential for devastating loss. I wonder how the woman who was interviewed, God forbid, would feel if her house burned down or worse. For a measly $10,000.

The fact is that accidents do happen, that some people are not responsible and stuff happens.

Actually the communists make *awesome* foreworks! Well, okay, mainly it's the Chinese communists. Cuban fireworks kinda suck, now that you mention it.

Unfortunately in our society, it's the irresponsible actions of a few that ruin it for the rest of us. I wouldn't be surprised if we see fireworks banned altogether sometime in our lifetimes.

My apologies to the moderators if this is considered a negative post..
I have opinions, you have opinions. We'll just call it even...is that OK ??

If we ban fireworks, only the terrorists will have fireworks.

pssst, most of the fires were started by lightning - was that God being irresponsible?

BTW, there are now 1024 fires going right now in Cali

+1

I'm not sure how banning safe & sane fireworks is going to stop the fires that are started from lightning, which is how many of the fires they are dealing with this week started. How is banning safe & sane fireworks going to stop some butthead from throwing a burning cigarette out a car window?

I saw a TV news story the other evening showing fire crews putting out a small grass fire that had been started by fireworks - ILLEGAL fireworks, not safe & sane.

Those fireworks booths raise a lot of funds for many youth groups.

The emergency fireworks ordinance is last years. The only thing I have heard so far this year is Arnie's call to "not buy fireworks". Will a new emergency ordinance comeout, possibly, but this thread should be locked IMO and a new thread opened to discuss this year.

calm down...it's just a discussion on whether or not they should be banned...does it really matter that it was started last year?
