I'm going there shortly to meet a friend. I thought the pastries were better than Ettore's.

I agree. I had one of their chocolate croissants today (the ones that are actually shaped like a croissant), and it was delicious. thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

The main thing for me, though, is their bread. They do free bread tasting every Friday. It's German bread. A lot of whole grain, no sugar added, crusty bread. I've been looking for this kind of thing in this area for 12 years. I was sad when Ettore's left, but I'm sad no more.

Try it!

Has any one tried Heart of Europe? I keep meaning to go in and try the schnietzel.

We tried it tonight. I don't know when it opened, but I saw the big "now open" sign from Winco today.

It was very good. I had the sauerbraten; it was good but not as good as the Hofbrauhaus in Las Vegas. smile.gif The spaetzle was ok, it was more of a long noodle than what we've had before (and different than what we make). The red cabbage was excellent!! Probably the best I've had.

My wife had the wiener schnitzel, she really enjoyed it. I tried it too and thought it was good, but schnitzel is a pretty easy thing to make.

They had a big selection of drinks, including 4 beers on tap (two German).

Like any new restaurant, there were some things rough around the edges still. The bread wasn't real fresh. Service was ok, but not excellent. Very friendly people there though.

We'll be back; next time I plan on trying the beef rouladen. And maybe a Czech beer.

I wish I would have checked this thread earlier! I thought it was about a sausage place or something. O'Brot - what IS that?

Anyway, I am going to have to check this place out. I'm so bummed I neglected this thread because I would have liked to have ordered an Ettore's cake recently. We got one at Karen's instead, and were NOT impressed. sad.gif

Ditto on the chocalete croissant, it's pretty tasty. The chocolate/banana pastry is also very good. I hope the place does well.

I agree - and I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were. Someone said they may be getting their stuff from Ettore's - I'll have to ask that next time I go there

I discovered lately that O'Brot has a pretty high-value-for-dollar breakfast. Although the eggs needed work...

I though CW said this was on Blue Ravine?

If this is the same place I'm thinking about ( directly across from IHOP in the brown building in the parking lot?)---did they have a new owner / turnover?

I went there a year ago--and was not impressed. All the pastries and breads were dry and tasted day old.

This is where Ettore's used to be. We had lunch there on Sunday. They were doing a brunch/lunch and it was very good. I had a turkey burger and it came with plentiful fresh fruit and wedge potatoes. Really good value and everything was fresh. Loved the triangle-shaped bread they bake themselves, full of whole grains and seeds. We also got some baked goods to go, like the apple struedel and another fruit pastry. Excellent!!!

You're thinking about Bella Brue(?) and I think they're gone out of business, the last several times I was by there the windows were all covered with paper and it was dark inside.

O'Brot! is on Blue Ravine, but has a Natoma station address. Don't ask. The shopping center in which it is located is at the intersection of the two streets -- but it faces Blue Ravine.

Wow!!!! :2thumbsup:
Looks like the ownership has changed last 1-2 years.
I just in love with the place, I was their "bread customer" for the last 2 years and last year I've started having a weekly lunch there as part of my "lunch diversification" :D:
The chef, named Sveta is great and really lovely person, I’ve talked to her and she is the one running the place by herself, she is a chef and a manager, what a headache..…
1) The bread is delicious, I usually call in advance and ask her to bake a fresh one from the kind I love and it’s ready within 20 minutes. If you’ve been to Europe you’d understand why I am so obsessive to have a really good bread.
2) Unfortunately, I haven’t had a chance yet to have a breakfast, but my friends loved it, I have to find one day to have it as well.
3) I do go there at least once a week for a lunch, usually I have soup and salad…No words…It’s fresh, delicious and fulfilling, I just wish we will see more diversification there.
4) The pastry is really delicious and the cakes are top notch…and I am trying to be on diet with all that ;) .
As I’ve mentioned, from speaking with Sveta, she is looking to expand the menu with really cool things from Ukranian cuisine, like attached below pics.....
Let me know if you'd like to understand what are these :drink:

Please visit the place and let’s have it live and hopefully we will see soon more Russian/European dishes coming out, at least I will keep asking Sveta for more :banjo:

O!Brot is shifting a gear and starting to serve more great stuff.
Last Friday they served "russian pelmeni" aka dumplings, it was a bit crowded.
The dumplings was delicious and the way I remember it from my childhood.
I've signed up for their email list and just have received next week special
Bravo O!Brot! :cheer:
They are setting a new website: www.cafeobrot.webs.com
