What do you consider a tree holding pole?

Since he said "poles", it's probably the round wooden ones.

Anyway, how do you remove those metal ones without risking ripping the roots?

Several whacks in multiple directions with a 15 lb sledgehammer usually does the trick. Sometimes I have to resort to the pickaxe as a crowbar against the bumps on one side of the post to pull it out. It might damage a few of the roots in the immediate vicinity < 1" radius from the post, but not enough to cause the tree any lasting real harm.
I would rather be Backpacking

Just a couple weeks late, I had several but I've already gotten rid of them. I'm curious, what's the project with them and mirrors???

I am starting a project on our back wall ( we back up to Praire City by Blue ravine and have a wall instead of a fence in the back. ) and on the side fences to put mirrors on the surfaces and also maybe some painted murals. The Mirrors will reflect back the yard. Here is one example although it is not mounted yet.

The Poles are used - yes for holding up trees , but I also use them on many other projects-

veticle poles to hold up a walk through cover on a path, Poles for hand rails and to hold up other hand rails of other materials, cut them in various lengths (10-20") and put them next to each other to make a nice edging, put them inside PVC pipe to make a strong cheap 20 ft Flag Pole, make TeePee,s for vines to grow on, horzontal as the boarder of a 'fenceboard' deck and many ideas I still have not tried yet.

Here are a couple of shots that might show them-

And Yes- it is the wood ones that I am looking for more- any Size-

I don't have any of those, but I have a ton of various lengths of quarter round. Some painted white, some stained a cherry color. They are leftovers from our bad hardwood install. Let me know if you want 'em. I also have some engineered Asian Rosewood planks leftover too.

Those are good ideas. If I free myself of any more, I'll let you know.

Anytime! I'd love to get rid of them. I'll put them all in the garage, just let me know when you want to pick them up. Today is even fine, we'll be around.
