It's very disappointing to hear that Sudwerks is not living up to it's reputation. I used to love the Sudwerks across from Cal-Expo. They had excellent food and the beer list was extensive! I hope they can iron the kinks out soon!

ditto here - what a dissapointment to hear...
Darth - sorry to hear it sucked there but glad to hear you enjoyed Manderes
hopefully this is just growing pains because the Sudwerks in Davis was pretty good... I am hoping for the same here.
with all this info now I think I'll wait a few weeks before heading over there - give them more time to get the bugs worked out

Yea this doesn't sound like the Sudwerks I remember. The one in Davis and Cal Expo was about the good beer and a more German themed menu. Sounds like the original owner/owners of Sudwerks sold out and the new guy has come in with the old name, but a new menu.

The potsticker appetizers were just okay but the Seafood Pasta, Seafood Paella and the Filet were all very good. Loved our waiter too.

Didn't have any rice though I must say had I been served rice a roni I would have said something to the waiter.
I think it's just growing pains and I think the inside looks great.
Finished off the night at Manderes, gotta love that place

I agree...Went there for Mothers Day dinner and only 2 beers on draft-the waitress said their CO2 wasn't working--whatever! The place felt odd and the wait staff seemed nervous. My daughter's pizza tasted like something from Chuck E Cheese and our food seemed just okay. Threw down $140 for 4 adults, 2 kids to eat and was it worth it? I think the only way I would return is that their beer taps are working, they have a live band, and fun as that is REALLY what that place is now all about. Good bye to fine dining on that cliff.
A few other observations: a couple behind our group had water and got their food but they got REALLY upset and walked out because they ordered drinks and had not got them for nearly an HOUR. The place was NOT that crowded and there seemed to be plenty of wait staff. I just don't get it. Aren't the owners supposed to be experienced?
Then, it appears that most of the "old" Cliff House crowd had no idea this was a new place. You could tell as they walked in and wandered around in a daze thinking "Are we in the right place?" It has been cleaned up and is fresher, I'll give them that. However, after the booze took over it was the same old crowd doing there chaotic dancing to really loud crappy wedding music. It was awful.
It's pretty sad that the place can do such a crappy job by not even being able to serve draft beer but they'll still get by from all the old folks who get hammered thinking they are still at Cliff House.
We did go to Manderes after and it was pretty good. No crowd though which was OK since the space is really limited.

I've been to both as well (Davis one several times), and I don't recall it every having a German themed menu despite the name of the restaurant. In Davis they have very good food and very good beer (I always get the Marzen when I go to Spaghetti Factory too). I think they just opened too quickly and need to work out a few issues.

I started visiting the Davis unit in the early nineties. There were some definite German options then - at least sausages. I usually went to the litres of marzen though.

My understanding is that Sudwerks in Davis used to be well known for it delicious german food, and german style beer. Then, a couple of years ago, it was sold, and the new owners changed the menu to a more california-pub type fare. No one was terribly impressed by the food, but even so, that type of menu has a broader appeal.

The rest of the dinner experience goes down hill from there.
First we ordered Water w/Lemon (had to ask SEVERAL times for the Lemon - while noticing that the Wait Staff were simply all standing around at the BAR socializing).
Ordered 1 Beer and 1 Glass of Wine - had to wait FOREVER to get either, they noted that the Beer wasn't working properly.
Ordered the Chicken Quesadilla and a Salad.
I had the Salad, and my wife tried to eat the Chicken Quesadilla, but it was so bland (Boiled Chicken) and tastless that she gave up and didn't eat. We asked for anything (salsa) to spice it up - they offered Tobasco as the only solution.
We gave up - she didn't eat her dinner, and amazingly they took it off the bill - as the Waiter never paid any attention to us at all - so I was surprised he thought to take the meal off. Seeing the full dinner still on the plate uneaten (other than 2 bites) probably tipped him off.
The same Boiled Bland Chicken was in my Chicken Salad as well.
Was NOT good food, wait staff was unhelpful and extremely slow.
We had high hopes for a new place to go - I don't think we'll be going back.

Wifey and I stopped in for a quick dessert yesterday evening. Very disappointing. The service seemed lost and confused, not even knowing what was on their menu. The dessert we had (chocolate mousse torte) was boxed, frozen, and tasteless. To quote someone else, above, the atmosphere is certainly "cafeteria-like". The lights are all up high. They removed the center fireplace and instead have rows and rows of tables. Everything just seems cheaply half-done. The front of the building is painted, but not the back or sides. The flooring looks like discount laminate, with bathroom tile in the entryway. The bathrooms are untouched. Very strange, sad, and certainly not living up to the opportunity that location presents.
