I have lived in El Dorado County my entire life, spent several years as a trail runner, and have only ever seen 2 rattlesnakes, one just a few months ago in my neighbor's garage. He's a family law attorney, so I assured him the snake wouldn't bite him, you know, just out of professional courtesy.

ewwwwwwww that just gave me the creepy crawlies!!! We had a baby by our trash cans last spring and I am in Lexington Hills. Our backyard backs up to the wetlands and the college--when they were building the college a few years ago we had a huge one in our backyard and someone had to come get it. We put in a "snake fence" (wire mesh type) on the back near the wetlands and have not had one in our backyard since.

EEYOW!!! I would mess my pants if I ever came that close to one of those! But don't let snakes keep you from living in such a great town!. I have lived in this area since 1980 and have only seen the two by my mother in laws and she was next to wetlands.

Now I just hope I never have to run into one!!
Folsom is Beautiful, we love it, the only hindrance for me is the whole snake issue, (as it is my Biggest fear)
Btw, We just moved here from San Jose :-)

We did, too. We made the move from San Jose 17 years ago. I don't get the chance to go back often, but every time I go I'm thankful we moved up here. I miss Cosentino's and the Holland Pastry Shop, which I have to stop in whenever I get down there to get our favorite cheeses.

If you play golf at Empire Ranch or Serrano, if you hit your shot off the fairway into the brush, be very careful if you choose to go look for it...Might not be worth it..

We live in Empire and have since 2000...first couple years, I killed 6 (3 were huge 6-8 rattles). One bit my dog ($$$$). I put up snake fencing and have only seen a couple in the front yard (we're adjacent to a wetlands area). Be careful!

Walking and biking around the lake I've seen more snakes in the last ten months than in six years living in the desert.

Welcome to Folsom
Snakes in general come out only during pleasant evenings...have never seen them any other time...one of them showed up in my garage...but went away peacefully.
Have almost stepped on it everynow and then when I go to the mailbox...but, I know they are around, just like possibly so many other hazards like flooding, earthquake, fire, humans (the bad kind). Just don't think about them...and avoid them when you do face them...no biggie

Hi-We are 3 years new to Folsom.Never saw a rattler until our move here, our 1st day in our new home our dog was bit by a baby rattler. My husband has a system, construction type big tall rubber boots and 2 square shovels. You have to chop off the head and GET RID of it since the venom is in the fangs/head. Just keep your eyes open, be careful when working in the bushes. . .I JUST killed one by myself this afternoon, it was on our driveway as the kids were coming in from school. I realize the snakes were here first and they serve an important purpose, keeping down the rodents, but my adrenaline was high since I believed my kids were in danger. . . Good luck P.S. I've talked to lots and lots of people who have lived in new homes/developments in Folsom and have NEVER seen a rattler!! You should look up pictures of King Snakes (they eat rattlers and are not supposed to be harmful to us), gardner snakes (not venemous) just in case. . ..Good luck- I think you will LOVE Folsom. ..

Hi
Yes, yes! There are lotsa rattlesnakes around Empire Ranch. The first day we moved in, a snake rattling like mad zoomed into the garage chasing a field mouse! I got back in my car. Thankfully, nothing was in the garage yet so we could see it & be sure it was gone.
I hate these things - what ever kind they are. Be very careful.

Yes, there have been many at McFarland park, esp. up near the big oak tree by the baseball fields. One night my son played baseball and we found 3 within about 30' of each other, all in about 1 hour. Other parents have reported seeing them at other games played on the same field. Some were in the tall grasses but others were just out on the bark under the tree or the grassy area. Be careful there, and on the trails in the Parkway. We have seen 3 or 4 this season already. I think they tend to seek shade during the heat of the day come out more at dawn and dusk when it is cooler.
If you have a dog you can get it vaccinated against a rattlesnake bite. It requires 2 shots initially and then 1 per year as a booster. At $29/shot it is a bargain since just one bite can cost thousands to save the dog. Our dog is vaxed and we are still cautious with him in the grasses, but at least we feel he is a bit more protected.
Enjoy Folsom...it's a great town!
