I dunno about you guys but I can read them. I think they look nicer than the ugly green ones. As for the Double-Layer Historic District sign, I can only assume they'll be taking down the leaning over ugly green one soon. Yes, expensive, and yes, probably useless if you already know where you're going. But I remember trying to learn these streets and they would've been really nice to help me get around.

Well, finally someone besides me says he can read the signs! Makes me wonder how often people get their vision checked. But then it does explain the way some people drive!

I'm ambivalent about the new signs. I think they look nice, but as a resident, I already know where everything is, so I don't really need them.

However, last weekend we had some out of town guests come by. On their way to our place they drove through town and said the signs helped out a lot. Now I realize it's a case study of one, but that's the "target market" for the signs. I feel like most of the people complaining are residents. Folsom does not have a "traditional" grid pattern of streets and hose signs are a help for those unfamiliar with the layout. For that, I think they're worthwhile.

I'm not sure its a matter of whether the signs are useful or not. I think its a matter of whether its a good spend of ~360k right now. I know all this money is bucketed up and has to be spent in certain areas. Maybe we ought to ask our legislators to bust those laws for the term of this recession so we can spend money on teachers and firefighters and police rather than cutesy signs, extra carpool lanes and the like.

We need better prioritization. If the current laws dont allow us to spend smart, lets change the laws.

When I'm going to be visiting some town I'm not familiar with I go to google or yahoo maps and print it out. I don't depend on signs once I get there.

How many signs does $396,000 buy? I still don't think it's a proper use of redevelopment funds which are meant to eliminate blight. Use those funds to repair sidewalks and streets.

I think the concept is right, price tag is not. They are obviously trying to help out of towners, and I believe the lions share of the $$ is coming from the tourism tax on hotels. But $400K for signs, some of which were obviously unneeded? A bit much.

Brad....good to hear from you!!!! How's the retirement gig treating you?

I think the signs are rediculous. $55,000.00 for a bid process??? Are you kidding me? And there is no way those signs cost that amount to make. What a waste of time. Hope you Local 39 guys like the looks of those signs on your furlough fridays, because that's the kind of stuff that caused the furloughs in the first place. Awesome way to spend our money Starsky.......wait a sec....what's your line? "Not on my watch"!!!!!!

Yes, the actual dollar amount spent is excessive, but when was this project started? I would hope it was a while ago. There are many projects that got rolling when the economy was just starting to decline that had to be completed.

BTW, I have absolutely no problem reading any of the signs, I think they do look nice and are helpful. If you can not read them, then you either need glasses or need to slow down. Don't get me started on the IDIOTS and rookie driving I see in Folsom everyday. As for directing people the long way, well they are not meant for people who know where they are going.

The dollar amount doesn't surprise me, but only because I blame it on government inefficiency. Not much you can do about that...

Want to know how much the city spent on the new signs we see erected all over Folsom? Yes, the ones with the font that is too small, and you need to be stopped in order to read them..........that's the ones. Here is what the city spent on these signs:

Design: $34,000 paid to Square Peg, Redevelopment funds, account number 173-21-04-046

Bid process: $55,000 cosultant fee paid to SCI Consuting Group, General fund, account number 173-21-06-042

Improvement and installation, phase 1: $292,676 paid to Young Electric, Redevelopment funds, account number 174-21-07-107

Implementation, phase 1: $15,000 paid to Square Peg, Redevelopment funds, account number 173-21-08-013

The total for these signs was $396,676.00. All but $55,000 came out of the Redeveopment funds which cannot be used for employees salaries, benefits, etc, but $55,000 did come out of the General fund which can be used for employees. As the city lays off employees and implements furlough days for their employees (1 day a month, which equates to 5% of their salary per month) don't you think they could spend their money a little more wisely. I am a retired city employee and love this city, but we need to keep track of how the city is spending its money. The above information was obtained through the Public Records Act which anyone can access through the City Clerks office.

Hi Neighbor (I live around the block from you), welcome to the forum.

Great note and excellent detailed info about the cost break down of these signs. The idea was nice, but the execution was bad - the design is very poor and the size of text is unreadable until you are right on top of the sign. It really surprised me that the city went through with putting up these signs that seem to me to be very ineffective and somewhat useless.

I completely agree with you that the city funds could have been much better used on employee salaries.

Who ever approved the sign designs seems to have done it in haste for some unknown reason.

You do know you're not supposed to stop and park in front of the signs to read them (which is about the only way to legibly read them completely)

Were you on the committee that approved these signs? huh.gif
