Good lord, why the eff did you people move here if you love the bay area so much?

I actually like News10, Fox40's pretty good too (Jim Crandall is awesome). I love Good Day Sacramento just because in the morning it puts me in a good mood. I'm not awake enough at that hour for serious news. KCRA, eh, I'm not their target demographic.

I grew up in the Bay Area and do miss KTVU news. Every now and then I catch them at my parents house or up in Tahoe or something, it reminds me of home. Folsom's my home now but I will always be a Bay Area kid.

Unfortunately news has largely had to get sensationalistic. If it bleeds, it leads. I think TV News will ultimately buy out what's left of the newspapers in a few years when they are in dire straits. But comparing our TV to San Francisco is just not fair. The good, young talent will eventually leave for a bigger market. We have to accept that Sacramento will always be second banana to San Francisco.

That's the exact wrong attitude to have. The cities are totally different and it's pointless to compare them.

I'm not from here, as you know. But I don't come on here and bash Sacto every chance I get. Not saying you do (just your post set me off there) but there a lot of transplants that sure (censored) a lot about how much they hate everything that isn't bay area.

I know, I'm just teasing you. And I agree people tend to forget that the Bay Area is just a bigger market. And really I have no beef with local TV news - it is what it is and has always been that way here (dunno if you remember "Stormin' Norman" Jacobs or not). And Bay Area TV news is not exactly the height of hard news. And the TV news traffic *has* gotten better here, with neat up-to-date graphics and such, though once I'm home who cares what the roads are like?

But Sacramento radio has seriously declined over the last 25 or so years. Shoot, I remember back when Rush Limbaugh was just some guy making fun of Rio Linda, but the point it he was local and had a local show with supporting news team. Now we get the majority of our radio news and shows from elsewhere. What is there now? Armstrong and Getty? Tom Sullivan,? Those are the only ones I can name off the top of my head, not counting the sportscasters on 1140.

yeah but radio as an industry is terrible on the whole. You guys who have lived here or in the bay area your whole lives don't know what real, terrible local radio is like.

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something-something I can use
People love it when you lose,
They love dirty laundry

Well, I coulda been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I dont have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear
Give us dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em all around

We got the bubble-headed-bleach-blonde who
Comes on at five
She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam
In her eye
Its interesting when people die-
Give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation?
Is the head dead yet?
You know, the boys in the newsroom got a
Running bet
Get the widow on the set!
We need dirty laundry

You dont really need to find out whats going on
You dont really want to know just how far its gone
Just leave well enough alone
Eat your dirty laundry

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down

Kick em when theyre up
Kick em when theyre down
Kick em when theyre stiff
Kick em all around

Dirty little secrets
Dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybodys pie
We love to cut you down to size
We love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo
We can dance and sing
When its said and done we havent told you a thing
We all know that crap is king
Give us dirty laundry!

Just to elaborate on my rant, there were a lot of things I hated about the Bay Area. I hate Sacramento because its like a compressed Bay Area. Not Folsom though, which is why I moved here. Sacto is just a big ugly blemish on this entire region.

You can tell this isn't the Bay Area because the temperature goes up and down

My favorite is the weather report:

Last night it was 52', the Sun rose at 6:17am, to a cloudy sky with winds from the southeast at 10muphs. That lasted until about 10:30 this morning, when the sun came out and the temperature rose to the mid 60's. Today's high was 72' around 3pm, which was just 2' short of a record for this time of year.

Tomorrow it may rain.

Back to you, Jim.

I skip around the local news channels a lot. I try to watch News 10 to support our local girl Christina Mendosa.

I also enjoy Good Day Sacramento for pretty much the same reasons John cited. I'd rather have a little silliness in the morning than political blather first thing. I miss Michele Kane since she left Good Day(she was a Folsomite, too.) Even my no-collar self finds it possible to only watch a half hour or so before I drag my knuckles over and hit the off switch on the remote.

Okay, so this may sound like a snooty rant: but is anyone else annoyed with Sacramento's local news stations? I feel like no matter what channel I turn to, I get silly anchors doing rediculous segments and have this unprofessional and almost high school-like banter with one another.

I agree. I much prefer a professional demeanor on news shows. It's pretty clear to me they're all gearing for a target audience that isn't me.

It's also frustrating to tune into the local news out of a desire to see local news only to find the local news program allocating a substantial portion of their time covering national and international news. I can watch other news programs on their networks and other networks for that coverage.

I've pretty much given up on local news because a good share of their coverage are clips and stories that will be covered on the national news. One of my pet peeves is "man on the street" interviews...I don't need the opinion of an Average Joe or a cute five year old regarding the latest solution to the economic crisis.

I catch the news for the weather and prefer Mark Finan or Dave Bender. specool.gif They've been doing the weather for years and are the most accurate of the lot.

I despise most of the news on any channel because they have all gone to the National Enquirer-style news--blood, mud and lots of smearing--or oozing over the political person or issue of their choice. The bulk of the reporters are all over themselves to stick a microphone into the grieving family-member's face and ask how they feel now their loved one is dead, or even better--getting the criminals' friends to say what a great person the killer was. madsmiley.png They jam the story out despite having NO details, no real info and no truth to anything but the fact that SOMETHING happened. And the screaming, fainting fandom of the local, state and national politicians is beyond nauseating. censored.gif

Nope--catch the headlines on KFBK and weather on KCRA, and I'm done. soapbox.gif

I owe my 15 minutes of fame to local news...

Local news channel 3 back in 1999 red the Friday morning front page article in the Sacramento Bee about rents going up and how it was affecting rents on single family homes...

This story gave the Channel 3 news producer the idea of doing a story... so when they started calling property management companies... we were just about the only one that answered the phone...

Would I like to be interviewed about the rental market...? "heck yea"...

so I got to be on Friday at 5:00PM.. 6:00PM, 10:00PM on 58.. 11:00PM on 3 again...
and on the following Saturday... they had me on 2 more times from 7 am til 9m..

So... now that my 15 minutes of fame are gone...? what does a guy do now...?
