Thanks Dave.

I couldn't get it to work, no tethering option in the network settings.

It looks like he's still working on a mobile config for the 3.1 firmware. I'll check back in a couple of days and see if he's got it working.

try it again, I've got 3.1 and its working great - just make sure to follow everything exactly step by step - you might need to reboot too

if your iphone is already jail broken, I'm not sure it will work with that (but it should)

It Figures...

When Apple released its highly anticipated iPhone OS 3.1 firmware update for the iPhone and iPod Touch, some users' worries were confirmed: the tethering hack we blogged about in June no longer works.

After upgrading, if you navigate on your iPhone to the Settings app, select General, then Network, you will see that the menu item for tethering has vanished.
Developers have not yet been able to find a way to downgrade or re-enable the tethering hack. If you or someone you know has had a different experience, we would like to hear about it in the comments.

Updated on 9/10/2009 at 10:15 AM PDT: According to user comments below, tethering remains intact for some, but not for others. Varying versions of the AT&T carrier file seem to be responsible for the discrepancy. We'll be seeking comment today from AT&T and Apple regarding these carrier files.

I must be one of the lucky ones - I just checked and my tethering feature is still working under 3.1 for me.

Did you actually connect and use the internet connection, or just check to see if it is still there in the network menu on the iphone? What everyone on Apple's forum are reporting is that it still shows until you actually try to use it, at which point it disappears.

yes the connectivity is working.

I figured AT&T would be tweaked about it, they're not able to charge an additional $60 a month like verizon does for their mobile pc connectivity. I'm sure AT&T wants more then 20 a month for unlimited data usage

Just installed and using tethering for this post. Seems as fast as my DSL. Hmm . . . maybe I can get rid of my land line and dsl and save $45.

I'm tremendously impressed with the iPhone's tethering capability, i haven't had much problem with ATT, but i've heard more than enough people unhappy with it to know it's not great everywhere.

I was impressed with the speed, it wasn't too bad - not super fast but lots better then I was expecting. You almost could get rid of DSL and just use that...

I think a better goal would be to get an online calendar, like google calendar, and sync it with two desktop apps, iCal and Outlook on the PC.

I have seemingly constant problems with MMS and Tethering on AT&T.

I also drop calls all the time on 50 just east of E. Bidwell.

I also get no reception at all at my desk.

Got a response from a friend in ATT sales and he said this problem should be fixed in 1-2 months.

They've been saying that since the iPhone hopped on their 3g network.

True, because I have called and complained about it a couple times over the past five years. It is an incompatibility between two different carriers, since you leave AT&T's network when you drive into EDH.
