So, here's my take...

1) The politics section will be back. I will be more strict in enforcement of rules, and nuisance posters will be removed when we see fit. However political debate is part of life and I don't want to remove it. I just want to bring civil discussions back.

2) This website is a business, Someone has to pay the bills for hosting, promotions, stuff like that. However it's a business that benefits the community as well. I can't tell you how many local businesses (and members) benefit for free from the referrals on this forum. I really appreciate when a business thanks me by purchasing an ad with me.

3) As far as change... it's the only constant in life we can count on. smile.gif

I'm with you there. I'm INCREDIBLY passionate about my beliefs or as some would consider the lack thereof. I'm a devout atheist and a VERY liberal democrat. Does that make me right or wrong? No, it make me ME. I choose normally to keep those facts to myself because I don't care for it to color the other discussions we might have.

I have friends who are devoutly religious and republican. Do I understand it? No. I can't even begin to comprehend how someone could think that way but it doesn't mean their opinions don't matter. I'd just prefer that when I'm talking about electricians that the fact that they are christian or republican not come up. I care about what kind of electrician they are, not what their religion or political leanings are.

There are so many things about the world and about Folsom that we can talk about WITHOUT religion or politics being involved. Let's give it a shot, shall we?

I haven't posted much since the politics section was closed because I really don't have time for fluff and stuff. The other stuff on the forum can be useful at times, but I really don't care to read about "whining" over life's unavoidables, like dog pop and bad drivers.

Not liking to be told what I can, and can not say, I doubt there will be a political forum here in the future that appeals to me. When one can in any way, take offense to what you have posted, there will be those that choose to take offense and that will always be a problem. Moderating being nice in all regards will be difficult if not impossible. I can follow rules. What I can't do is follow some vague idea of what is correct posting and what is not.

I think that we have turned a corner on this forum and doubt it will ever be the way it was before. I sensed that when John appointed an administrator. As far as I know there was never one before, and I wondered what it meant when he appointed one. I guess we are finding out.

Maxine, since by your own admission, you have no use for the " whiny" Folsom boards other than the politics section, and since you are constantly whining about the current lack of politics and how it is/has been and will be administered in the future, why not start your own politics board?

No need to start a politics board. There's hundreds out there! I personally can't begin to comprehend why some posters hang around here only to discuss national politics. You don't need Folsom to talk about Washington D.C.

Mylo, I have to agree with you. It's been much more civil on the board over the last month. As a frequent Politics poster in the past, I think it's time to give it a rest for a while, so my New Years Resolution will be to avoid the politics section entirely!

Now back to that comcast thing....

As CW68 would say....."and this is how it starts." She was referring to the back and forth insults that occur with these types of posts.

I have a policy of my own which goes like this...

If a post to me is personally attacking in any way....I don't respond.

If a post to me adds no valuable content....I don't respond.

I feel that some posts don't deserve a response and will be only further encouragement for more like posts.

That said.....I'm not dignifying this post with a response.

We can go back to talking about blood, guts and politics.

nefarious beliefs of the rampant indigenous locals (sacramento drivers)

re-tell watercooler office jokes involving the fat guy and global warming. (phew)

object to goat roping elected officials into decision making on the ecomonic impact of quartering giant butterflies in an eco friendly bubble....... (Unqualified decision processing of elected officials)

And OTHER IMPORTANT POLITICALLY MOTIVATED CONVERSATIONS!!!!!!

I too like intelligent debate, without the insults and name calling that so often has occurred in the political section.

One can not debate well, when they are dodging the slings and arrows. Also, one can not learn anything from a person who has nothing to add but insults and put downs.

I've done my share of defensive posts, after someone has come after me, but found it to be very dissatisfying. What I really want here is to learn what others think and why. I want to know how their mind works and what brought them to their opinions.....whether it was experience or being influenced by their parents, or something else.

What I don't understand is why some want to enter into the political section when they don't like to talk politics and only slam other posters and cause trouble.

To get it shut down, maybe?

The worse part of all?

New Years is upon us---All my bad habits are on hold--while I try to stop (this year for sure) and my ONE bad vice? Watching the politics threads unfold into tantalizing threads and sub threads of un-predictable directions---so much fun to watch......

I can't survive the day after New Years Resolutions without the politics thread!!!!!!

I need it...It's like the twin to my coffee in the morning.

Give me politics or give me death!!!!!

uhhhh hmmmm---ok-rant over--thank you for listening. For those of you who may have other non political rants you wish to throw out there--feel free to do so....
It is actually good for the soul....Chicken Soup for the something er other said so--I think....

Is it possible to create an Opt-In policy or feature to the Politics thread or apply the No Politics filter across all accounts?

This would allow the don't want politics enjoy MyFolsom as it is today with politics on ice, lost business to advertisement would be minimal and everyone can be happy. The No Politics that Darth Lefty and I have (and health appreciates) is great - if EAH, Chef and others dont want to see politics, add the filter like don't like reality TV, change the channel or remove it from your Channel Guide.

One other point - hopefully politics can be civil, factual, and polite where opposing sides of a topic can find new viewpoints vs. mudslinging or getting nasty. It also help to have politics tough mods that can take an unbiased side and enforce the current or new rules.

gotta add one more - the politics ban isn't working as seen in the Burn Day and Jokes threads since the ban.

I think that was my original question I was trying to raise- I have yet to see where people who believe passionately about something can be civil about it.
Even that thread about the $600 gift card someone went OFF on another person. I think it's not just politics (though that seems to be the worst) I think it's online forums in general - they seem to bring out the worst in people. If we all knew the person reading our posts were our next door neighboor, or office neighbor or boss - would we still post the same I wonder?

I think we should all get used to the idea that this forum is a commercial endeavor where money can be made from advertising. I was thinking this was a community forum, set up to be a service to the community....but it's not. It's a forum set up to make money.

Since I know how this type of forum works, like I know how any type of business works, I know that what is said here will always be up to critical review by the advertisers. And any time their ads are withdrawal or there is a possibility they will be, we will be warned and new measures will go into effect to control what is said here.

Not liking to be told what I can, and can not say, I doubt there will be a political forum here in the future that appeals to me. And, how anyone can donate their time and energy to anything set up to make a profit, is frankly, beyond my comprehension. But, I guess there are all kinds. I would rather donate my time and energy to a charity for those people who truly need help...not to those who are driven by a profit. I don't know how one can convince others to donate time to a company that is profit driven, but I'd love to find out. And I'd love to have some volunteers working for me!

John....what is your secret?????

I think that we have turned a corner on this forum and doubt it will ever be the way it was before. I sensed that when John appointed an administrator. As far as I know there was never one before, and I wondered what it meant when he appointed one. I guess we are finding out.

That was a whole lot of unnecessary sappy drama about this being only a commercial site and not for the community -you know that is an inaccurate statement and you're just upset that you don't have a place here right now to post your political thoughts and banter.

Did you really need to slam this site and John's endevours just because you're not getting your way? Some of us would view that as whining, the very thing you are complaining about (ironically)

You don't have time for "fluff and stuff" as you label (or should I say put down) our conversations about Folsom - but yet you have time to argue about politics? huh.gif

You call people "whiners" when they post and discuss local issues such as speeders and you think posting political rants is not whining? huh.gif

You think John should put up a forum so you people can argue about politics all day and he should do it on his own dime instead of trying to get commercial backing? huh.gif

You're just a bit too self centered, this place was not built just for you to have a political soapbox to rant from.

This site is about Folsom, not politics, get used to that fact.

Wow--I missed a thread about a $600 gift card?

Man--hey, whoever it was, if you don't want it, send it to me.

I think that for the most part it is very easy to be civil to people on a thread.

It is when you get those back handed insults that threads get outta control.

Just look above at the condescending way that EAH spoke to Maxine. Would you really talk to someone like that in real life?

Come on--people--chill out. There is another way to say you are grateful for the politics reprieve.

And I disagree with the posters who say that taking out the pollitics section has made the website nicer. It has not. It has made it quieter (nearly dead) which I'm sure is helping a whole lot with that whole click and count thingy--but, whatever.

Mylo is right about the world politic thing---it can be overwhelming in the prolific
posting. often times I find it rather boring. The local politics about goings -on around here--is interesting.

I wonder if we were to split world politics again-and add a ethics argument? So, if a conversation did get hot-it could be dropped into there? Not searchable--and only members can view-and I don't know-maybe make it not show up on the new posts query?

Maybe that would quickly chill out sudden craziness on the site.....?

Maybe because we want to discuss politics with those we feel closer to, i.e. same geographical region. I know I don't really want to talk politics with new yorkers and texans. I want to talk politics with folsomites.
