Looks fine, but I'm not in love with the black and white top banner photo. Is it just that particular picture, or would all of them be drab? Oh, and you have 2 colons after what's new. (sorry I notice these things)

It's a little fuzzy but the final would be higher quality... do you not like the black & white? (You prefer color?)

Well, in general I don't mind black and white at all, but for some reason, I found the rainbow bridge photo in b&w at the top to be a little depressing. I had an immediate 'ewww' reaction to it.

The mock site looks good but I wouldn't take the time to scroll down.

PS - I am hemming and hawing over fonts. I'm trying the headlines with a classic serif font (more "newsy") but I'm concerned it just doesn't flow well with it. I may stick with the fonts we have today.

No offense john but I think the latest mockups are looking older then the current version actually.

I like that you've dropped the giant borders around the ads.

I don't like the stacked 2 rows of shortcuts on the right side. I think it was done to make it look less cluttered but instead it looks more I think.

Classic font looks depressing and windows IE 6ish

Black and red break swirls looked lively'r

Black and white pictures look ghost town

Twitter, Facebook, RSS, Etc need to be buttons or something. If anything lists but the large and small text for such words really serve no purpose and look odd.

I would pull back the drop shadow a tad still.

All in my humble opinions of course. I really feel bad about leaving so many crits after such hard work but you asked for opinions... Keep at it man, you'll get it!

Here are a few comments I posted on FB.

I would swap the ads section to the far LEFT. Especially those of us that use wide screen see the ads right in the dead center of the screen. Swapping the content and Ads would allow more focus on the content. Also move the Local guides and local restaurants below forums and then reduce the excess grey ad margin.

I keep noticing that my eyes are pulled to the ads section more since the background is the dark gray- Use a white background to nuetralize it.

Cheers

I would think if I was trying to sell ads for myfolsom.com to keep the place up and running that the more noticeable the ads are in a clean design is a good thing?

fonts and colors are easy fixes, they will be something I can tinker with... some of the smaller nuances will be played with too.

hmmm--for what ever reason I don't notice much of a difference except that the topw picture--and the font for the words under the top pic.

I like the font being a bit bigger.

I know this will sound totally insane: but whenever I have to click on something that has small font I tense up_like I am going to have to squeeze my mouse through a thin window (I told you this sounds crazy)....so I like large font that I can just ease my mouse up to and click on --with no afterthought or tension....

Wow---that sounds really wierd when you type it---huhhhh

It's going to look a little different but I like everyone's points. The front page is going to look a lot more like a newspaper, which (hopefully) is a good thing...

With newspapers going the way of the dodo bird, and the few that are left are morphing into magazines... you sure that's the look you want to go for?
