One time (while in the Navy) I drove from Maine to Michigan. It was over 1,000 miles and I drove about 20 hours straight, stopping only for gas and food, before getting into Michigan. I was about 30 miles from home when I fell asleep while driving. I woke up just in time to see the rear end of a big rig. I veered left and went around him, lucky there was nothing coming from the other direction. I immediately found a motel, got a room and went to sleep. I slept for over 15 hours before I got up and continued on my way. I hadn't driven more than 10 miles and I got sleepy again so I pulled off the road and went to sleep in my car.
A little bit later I heard a knock on the window and a policeman was there wanting to know if I was alright or not as he could not see me breathing. I told him the story and he told me to go back to sleep and he would let the other police know I was in the car.
I guess I slept another hour or so before going on home.
The moral of the story. I never drive that long anymore. I stop and get a place to sleep if necessary and do not push my luck.
I know it was dumb to do what I did. Hope someone learns something from this story.

It's a good story and a good moral! But still you were alone and tired on the interstate. This lady falls asleep in stop & go surface street traffic with her kids in the back?

I know. I was young and foolish at the time I did it.
I wonder if she had been drinking. Has anyone heard?

All I can say is she must have some really quiet children, because usually kids make so much noise, you can't sleep while they are in a car.

Channel 3 just reported on this. The husband says " his wife had a big meal".
I will let you all comment on this one.

Yeah, and a few glasses of wine with it....
You can bet she will be feeling this in her wallet because you don't damage state property and get a hand shake.
Anybody hear about this crash?

I wonder how many of these we will have with high speed trains here in the future?

Teen who pulled mother and children from train's path says he's no hero
Todd McHugh, 17, stands on train tracks Tuesday off Folsom Boulevard where a vehicle carrying a mom and two kids swerved out of control and landed on the tracks. He pulled out the mother, who unbuckled her kids. The Bella Vista High junior said he "didn't do anything anyone else wouldn't have done."

It was nice to see this story made Yahoo's headlines, so it has gone galatic. Good for the teen.

Modest, level-headed kid thinking of the safety of others plus he is a Boy Scout working towards earning his Eagle. Saved the family and left after emergency workers arrived so as to not get in the way and apparently no desire to take is 15 mins of fame.
Bravo - we need more kids like this.
