Ladybugs usually fly away in search of water. So if you keep your garden well watered, the ladybugs will stick around. Also, release them at night, they don't fly at night.I tried ladybugs once, you're right, they all flew away within a day, aphids were still a plenty. Decided it was a waste of money buying ladybugs.

I bought preying mantis' and they stuck around and ate all the nasty buggies. :-) They are a bit startling to find though after they've been growing for a few months. ;-)Ladybugs usually fly away in search of water. Did you notice if they have worms (as well as the castings)?
No wormies.. I got mine at Peaceful Valley 'cause I was already up there, but it's a long drive (to Grass Valley) if that's all your going for. Maybe try www.wormfancy.com in Citrus Heights.

I bought them once to control aphids and they rocked! I followed the directions, watered and released them at twilight. It said they won't fly at night so this gives them time to realize there is a food source. They stuck around a long time!I tried ladybugs once, you're right, they all flew away within a day, aphids were still a plenty. Decided it was a waste of money buying ladybugs.
The kids and I watched their whole life cycle unfold in out yard. They mated, laid eggs, turned into larvae, pupae, then matured and flew away because by this time they had eaten all the aphids. It was cool but I haven't repeated.

There are still some things on sale like flowering Maples for $5.50.
Didn't have much to spend this trip, but definitely will be going back.
