The books we not sold. Folsom Library staff was very conscientious about keeping the books that belonged to the school collection at the site. Believe they even left some of their collection.

What happened to the books that were a part of the City of Folsom's collection that were purchased for use by both students and the public at that location? How many books are still left?

Why would the board not approve of books being donated to the school library?

I meant Board approval is not required -

Believe both collections were purchased separately -
I am not aware of the specifics/numbers etc...I'm sure Folsom or Vista Library staff can provide that information.

According to library staff, they were sold. So here would have been an idea:

We have a beautiful library partially paid for by the City. Let's assume that you can't get any sponsorship to keep it open. I do not believe any was sought, though not completely positive. So you decide that you are going to close it. You have two collections, but your other library is already full and there is no place to put the books. I will assume, going out on a limb here, that the vast majority of students at Vista are Folsom residents whose parents helped fund the books, again, could be wrong. So, would it be crazy to leave the books? Ok, no, you don't want to do that because of the different pots of money and the library pot wants to recover some of it's investment. What would happen if you offered the option to the VDL parents and students to sponsor purchasing the carefully selected collection for the VDL library. When books are sold by the Friends of the library, they go for about $.50 for paperback and $2-3 for hardcover. So, parents can sponsor a book shelf for say $50. Do you think that in a school the size of VDL in Folsom might possibly get 100 people to sponsor a shelf so their kid will have access to the library (with books)? So now factor in the cost of the physical move of the collection (you can't count the de-accession). And my guess is you would be up money. I would guess that you could easily get more than 100 - I would have gotten a few and my kids are not going to Vista.

My understanding is that all books that are donated to the friends of the library are set on a table for resell in order to fund operations of the volunteers activities at the libraries. There is another way to donate directly to the library and the book gets absorbed into the library--where it can be shelved or transferred to another library in the county.

Perhaps I am misguided, but that was my belief in the friends of the library program.

That is my understanding as well, except that the money does not just go to fund the volunteer program but can be used for other things. At one point a chunk was used to purchase computers for the library. You can donate money directly to the Friends or sponsor specific things like the Story Express Kits in the kids section. I was using the Friends book sale prices as a way of determining fair market value for the books at VDL.

The point I was making is that the books in the library at VDL -- were not sold. The donated books tio the friends of the folsom library have probably been mistaken as those books you are referring to?

I was told that the books that were the city's portion of the VDL library were sold as there was no room at the main library. The school's portion were not. I am going on what I was told at the time. Perhaps you have different information?

No, this is the first I have heard of anything about selling city invested books. I thought a measure had to be passed before anyone could sell city property.

So who is your source on this? I would think that city employees would not allow this type of transaction without first getting approval by an official in procurements, contracts, or book keeping?
