Coming home from a wedding, we went across that bridge about an hour before. It makes you stop and think, anything can happen in an instance.

Also, I had to call a towing company to change my flat tire today (I know I should know how to, but that's another story...), and they were the tow truck called to haul away the BMW. They said it was a nasty sight, and they have seen a lot.

That is truly scary! I don't think I have ever seen a photo of a vehicle that destroyed in a 2 car accident. I can believe that he/it was going 100 mph or better.

Kind of confusing story. Did the BMW enter onto Damn Road and reach 100mph before crashing right before the bridge, or.. was the BMW preparing to exit Dam road and crashed before the bridge?

The witness stated 100+mph, Im not sure that is possible on that stretch of road going uphill, and going downhill, it would be suicidal

You know, from seeing the pics of that accident I know exactly where that happened. It looks like the BMW was going up that long straight grade that comes after the bridge. The long sweeping turn to the right at the top is not designed well. It is really flat there and if you are going faster than the speed limit it will pull you to the left, towards the lake and into the other lanes. I drive a very fast performance car and I assure you I could be at 100+ easy at the top of the hill if I started at the bridge (but I never would do such a thing). The BMW driver obviously did not know what they were doing, young and maybe drunk....? I don't know what kind of BMW it was but I am guessing it was the X-5 M version which is very fast, about 550 HP with twin turbos. Poor kid died a terrible death. I can't think of many cars that could handle an unbanked turn like that at 100 mph......and none of them are SUV's. When I first drove on that road I was surprised that it was not divided in the middle with the cement three foot high or so divider..... Might not have saved everyone in this case but could have taken some energy out of the offending vehicle as to not kill someone in the opposite lanes. My heart goes out to the families here....especially that young father in the Honda who was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. RIP.....
Unfortunately it will take a few more of these fatal accidents before we get a center divider there. I think it is a good idea even if it is a bit late for these folks.....

I think you may have read that wrong. He said he went airborne on impact and then exploded in midair before coming to a flaming rest on the bike trail. here is what the witness said,"The oncoming driver from the bridge did not have their headlights on and was going at least 100 mph around the corner because upon impact the vehicle went airborne and exploded whilst still in the air before landing on the bike trail adjacent to the road and becoming fully engulfed in flames."

So, around the corner is what is throwing me off. Maybe they are talking about the turn at the top of the hill?

The driver of the Honda was a math teacher at Casa Robles high school. Such a tragedy since he was doing the right thing to insure his intoxicated friends were not driving while under the influence. I am sure those friends feel very guilty when the tragedy isn't their fault. I drive an SUV and don't go faster than 60 on that stretch. The speed limit is 55 as it is and that should be fast enough for all of us (me included). As Chris stated if there was a barricade between the two directions it would have limited the impact and perhaps the Honda driver could have survived.

So, around the corner is what is throwing me off. Maybe they are talking about the turn at the top of the hill?

wow, how sad. The driver must have really been tromping on the accelerator to maintain the speed with that kind of grade. The comments in the article talk about a brother saying one of the men left behind a wife and child. And that he worked at Intel. They say he was a brilliant man.

Its terrible how the best and brightest succumb to tragedies early in life. So very, very sad.

I hate to be a Richard but the guy was not the best and brightest nor brilliant to have been driving that fast and dangerous causing the death of another innocent man

Was the Honda driver a teacher or intel employee? It was noted above that he was a teacher...?

Was the other driver a Folsom resident? I heard it was. Also heard it was a 19 year old?

I drove past and saw the burn marks yesterday. It looks like what could have happened is that the driver of the SUV came over the hill going toward east natoma, heading down hill, he may have gone straight as the road curved to the right.

As for the driver, his name was withdrawn from the news reports, and I'd guess that might be because he hadn't been positively identified, but my daughter was told that a 19 year old that she went to middle and high school with had died in the crash.

She said he was an awesome guy. I looked up his Facebook and there were comments from friends saying they'll miss him.

Related to that, there are pictures on his Facebook of him and his buddies drinking and one with a picture of booze and weed saying 'Happy 420', and several photos of him flipping off the camera. None of this means that he was drunk or high, but it doesn't make him look like an awesome guy.

I feel so sorry for him, his family, the victim and his family, and everyone else who was touched by this tragedy.

There is a 19 year old that graduated from Folsom that passed away that night, but it is unclear if he died in this accident, or from some other cause.
