I do know that the Boise State University Broncos play on a blue field

in Bronco Stadium in Boise.

From what I have heard in the past they get a lot of birds diving down into

the ground thinking it is water and they kill themselves. Hope it doesn't

happen here.

I feel it is one hell of a waste of money that could be used elsewhere.

WHY did you have the football fields painted BLUE???

Someone needs to come up with the answer...

For clarification, which also may be a little tomato-tomahto... a new turf field was installed - the old one was not painted. It is my understanding the turf field was worn out and was due to be replaced. Playing on worn-out turf is a hazard to the players. If that is all true, then the question is was there an upcharge for the new turf to be blue? Who authorized that charge? Where did that additional money come from?

I'm wondering if that is why FHS's field cost $300k more than Rancho's?

Here's the link to the Fox40 story on it: http://fox40.com/201...football-field/

Here's a press release from the Turf Contractor:  http://www.hellasconstruction.com/2013/06/hellas-sports-construction-spreads-in-norcal/

I've never been to the footbal field, so I don't know if the previous turf was worn-out or not.

Does this mean my child's teachers will not be asking for classroom donations this year now that the district has money for such frivolous expenditures?

Probably not because classroom teachers won't see a penny of additional money. As a teacher I appreciate the kindness of the donations families make, but if you don't feel you want to donate just ignore the plea. :)

A quick google indicates blue fields cost more than green. One New Jersey school didn't go with the blue field because it was $45k more and the school board couldn't justify the extra costs. (Wouldn't that be nice?)

Yep. And after reading mrdavex's link from the contractor, it sounds like Rancho not only got a new field but a new track, too - all for less than what FHS paid.

If the field was due for replacement anyway, then the story becomes less of a shocker.  I would hate to think that $1.2 million was paid just to change from green to blue.  However, as you also wonder, it still raises an eyebrow (or two) if there is an extra $300,000 involved to use blue.

I also wonder what an actual grass field would cost to maintain and replace every few years.  Would it cost more than $100,000/year over 12 years?  Or would it cost much less?  Is there anything wrong with using grass?  Injuries?  Mud?  other?  Grass seemed to work out OK for decades.

You can tell how little I know about this subject.

With real turf there's the water conservation aspect to consider, too.

I believe there are fewer injuries on grass than artificial turf. Feet tend to stick when planted on turf and not rotate when hit, so there are more joint injuries.

In other FHS related news, they are finally lengthening the double left turn lane along Prairie City student entrance after 10 years of having the traffic back up into Iron Point.

Not sure where this $$ is coming from, maybe the Librarians.
