What department did you feel was screwed up? The volunteering or the drunks? I always thought the chamber did a great job with their volunteers.
Over the years as a volunteer, I found that the volunteer leads knew little and could not make a decision if their life depended on it (which is of great concern when there is a problem). They seem to be selected less on their ability and more on their chamber connections. So I decided to stop complaining and volunteer to be a lead. Went through the meetings and ABC training to run a bar. The day of the event, they said that they not need me for a bar now and asked me to be a volunteer to take other volunteers to their station, which was fine. Then as I would take people, I would find out that things were not set up, leads were not around or did not know what was going on, so the volunteers kept coming to me for help. Which sent me back to the volunteer coordinator to get the problem solved, she finally got sick of me showing up and locked herself in the chamber office. At that point, I decided I was done. When I volunteer, I look at it as a job that I must give 110%, I cannot do that with the chamber.
The event is fine, but as it has grown, the chamber has kept its good-ol-boy network rather than trying to improve how they operate, lots of money gets wasted and lost, they don't have the ability to run a large complex one-day business and are just happy with the revenue they take in.
I decided that there are other events to volunteer my time which are more satisfying.
