Thanks Terry, that's a very enlightened response, and very true. Normally I would agree with you, but there are always exceptions.

I know I disagree with many folks on this forum and the reverse is also true, but at least there is content in their responses even though I may not agree with them.

Only one user has met my ignore criteria, and it has nothing to do with whether I agree with his positions (political or otherwise) or not. In fact, on many posts we agree, there just isn't any content there.

When it's just political positioning and little real interest in exchanging ideas, little content, and it's just throwing out soundbites, well, that's of little interest to me.

I skip the commercials at home when watching tv for many of the same reasons.

If you don't believe me, just review the 500 or so posts - here's a sample of 57 recent posts. No content.

While it's way too complicated to be used on myfolsom, slashdot has a great moderator system. Moderator points are distributed automatically (and somewhat at random) to all users. Each user can then use a moderator point to rate a comment positively or negatively, causing it's "value" to rise or fall. When viewing comments, slashdot defaults to only showing comments that meet a certain threshhold (typically a value of 1, out of a range of -1 to 5). So you end up automatically "ignoring" comments that have been valued negatively by other slashdot viewers. Because there are so many slashdot users, only a small percentage of them ever have to participate as moderators for the system to work reasonably well. It's not perfect, but it certainly does filter out useless noise. And of course, you can set the threshhold that you personally wish to view threads at, it simply defaults to a value of 1.

I've belonged to communities that had strict criteria, allowed one or two warnings and then banned offending members. I don't see the point in setting up rules and then allowing members to continually ignore and break them.
