Yes here we go again trying to dictate to others how to live their lives and what colors they can use. I did an interior design consultation on Halidon, and found it much like most of Folsom bland, tepid, similar colors. Developments are often called cookie cutter homes in design and color.

Fortunately we live on a street of custom homes and people can show their creativity in style and color. On our block there is a big yellow Mediterranean house, a dark brown house, a dark gray and salmon house, a white house with fuscia trim, a dark tan Spanish style, a pure white Palm Beach style, a pale tan with turquoise trim, and a green house with darker green trim. Our house is Sandlewood with Black trim.

Variety is the spice of life. Emerson spoke out against conformity saying it was the product of little minds. J. Frank Dobie wrote "Conform and be dull". De Sallusste (1544-1590) wrote: " Only that he may conform to [the] tyrant custom."

Why do some always feel that anything different is a threat? Live and let live!

Did anyone ever notice that flowers are all not the same or similar colors?

Creativity is one thing but painting a house a ghastly color is another... But you're right, folks should be able to excercise their creative freedoms - unfortunately they bought a house in the wrong place tho if they wanna paint it some crazy wild colors.

I'm personally glad that there are rules on colors in my neighborhood, I like the basic natural tones on a house....if I wanted to go crazy with creative colors I would have bought a house out in Placerville or Auburn or somewhere on the outskirts like that... so that my creativity wouldn't impose on others.

When I lived in L.A. some houses in my hood were painted ugly shades of green, purple and pinks and just the most gawd awful colors you could imagine - sure they're being creative I suppose, but they're also being ignorant if they think that looks good - AND - it brought down the value of other houses on the street.

Your house being painted sandlewood with a black trim sounds nice - but I hate to say... if you painted it neon green with a purple trim it would not look as nice....

Don't get me wrong - I'm all for creativity but theres a right and a wrong place to do it.

Slippery slope there, fella. In this free country, a neighborhood's desire is secondary to the rights of the person who owns the place.

Have any of you read 'The Big Orange Splot'? It's a great kid's book, but can teach us all a lesson about tolerance, individuality and freedom.

When a seagull drops a can of bright orange paint on his neat house, Mr. Plumbean gets an idea that affects his entire neighborhood. One by one, his neighbors visit him to try to convince him to paint his house back a normal color. But one by one, their houses are transformed into the houses of their dreams - castles, Taj Mahal, hot air balloons...

And what is a "normal" color. In the preponderance of Folsom right now it seems that blah is the normal color. Creams, light tans, pale grays, faded tones or nearly monotones.

As long as there are individual rights and feedoms one person's normal color may be someone else's abnormal color. I am totally against sameness in color on every street. Even in our back garden one of the things we like the best about it is the seemingly endless variety of greens, reds, and yellows that nature provides.

People, cars, flowers, foods, all have varieties of color. And if you really want color look at the malls that are built...they are all yellows, oranges, purples, and bright colors. Why can malls have color and not neighborhoods?

Farley, certain colors are just offensive to my eyes. Many people are using colors I refer to as the "colors that come from within" ... snot green, infant diarrhea yellow/brown, vomit orange. When we were shopping for a home, we stayed away from neighborhoods that had color schemes that we didn't like, and the home we purchased has CC&Rs specifying that homeowners stay within the provided color schemes. We have neighbors who have deviated from those schemes, some more offensive than others to not only me, but other neighbors. But the issue isn't whether it's offensive to me; the issue is whether neighbors should be expected to live within the CC&Rs. We don't have an active homeowners' association, so nothing is ever done about this or other infractions. If free selection of color is allowed in a neighborhood, so be it.

I have never seen Orange Vomit .... and what I do see is that MOST houses would qualify for your Infant diarrhea... tongue.gif

oh man, I've seen the color vomit orange on lots of houses in L.A. - thats a pretty good description of the color too... my favorite was one that was that orange with a lime green trim - I called it the pumpkin house.

Wow that was quick. The owner is now repainting their home to something much more subdued.
Don't know if it was the laughing neighbors grouped up in front of their house or the actual owner second guessing their original color or both.

Anyway, a lot of us in the immediate neighborhood are glad to see the change.

Carrots or sweet potatoes will do the trick, as evidenced by my 7 month old this afternoon!

Seriously, though - the main problem I have with the CC&R dictated paint colors is that there are fewer and fewer places where a person can by a home without them. If you want a newer home, you're pretty much stuck with CC&R's dictating your paint schemes. Seems lame to me, to be honest. My neighborhood is a perfect example: I think there are 3 paint schemes spread between probably 200 homes. It's very boring to look at and I'm looking forward to the days when people start to break out of the mold a bit. That was one cool thing about living in downtown Sacramento - people had a lot of very eye catching and expressive paint jobs on their homes.

I fully realize that you will always get some people who just plain have bad taste. To me, that's a small price to pay for a little bit more personal freedom.

Yes and it's atrocious! I intend to bring a measure before the City Council which will dictate that wildflowers and garden flowers within the City of Folsom must be any of the following colors:

White
Off-white
Khaki
Tan
Desert Sand
Medium Desert Sand
Light brown
Sandalwood
Taupe
Beige

I, personally, have a very hard time with a group dictating what colors with which one can paint one's house. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? To me, a sea of bland/neutral colored homes is quite an eyesore. People bring character to their homes, as well they should. Would life be as beautiful if we were all to match?

Think of the striking orange and purple wildflowers dotting the gold California hills. Color brings beauty.

Let's each express ourselves, with keeping other's well being in mind. Some color does not bring down a home's value. Beige does not equal value.

BTW, watch out for the end result after eating red vevelt cake...
